Thanks. I read a website that told me to do a "Restore Bios Settings to System Defaults". By pressing F10 and reseting the bios settings, unchecking the "Keep Fan On" menu option then that turned off my fans off mostly.
They still seem to turn on now and then for no good reason.
Now my next problem is that the Keyboard no longer works when I boot to Ubuntu. HP should really test their hardware with Linux more.

The Ubuntu desktop and GUI applications occasionally stop seeing keystrokes on my dv7t.
The solution I have found is to switch to a text mode console and then back to the GUI environment:
e.g.
<alt><ctrl><F1>
<alt><ctrl><F7>
I have no idea why that incantation works.

Peace,
This might help, you have an overheating problem. The cpu thermal paste may have dried out or the heatsink is touching the cpu. THis causes the bottom of your laptop to become really hot, if this problem continues tiniy bits of solder on the motherboard can travel to other parts of the mother board causing your laptop to turn on.
What you do is this.
1. Get quick silver thermal compound
2. Get goof off from hardware store.
3. Purcahse cute-tips (ear clean)
A.Wet cute tip with ear tips and get all the old cpu compound of the heatsink and the cpu.
B. Once its miror clean, nothing on the cpu or heatsink apply compound to cpu.. [ see video online about this]
Check [ how to apply thermal compound to cpu heatsinks etc.. ]
C. Simply use a hair dryer on hot to the heatsink so it can stick, let 5 minutes go by and let it cool..
D. Put the heat sink back and vuala ( u have solved the heating issue )
Note: Robots put compound on the heatsink so they use a little, make sure there is a thin coat of thermal paste on the cpu. Dont use a lot, just a thin coat.. Use credit card if necessary to even the compound

Even i am suffering from the same problem. Whenever i restart my laptop from linux I get the error message saying "The system bios has detected that your notebook pcwas put into hibernation or shutdown to avoid overheating.
System Temperature-90D"
Tried all the methods that were discussed in the forums even updated the bios version to F.06 but all in vain. No use!
Its only been 4 days since i bought the laptop and already unhappy with it:smileysad:. I hope HP people come up with a solution to this problem soon.
I am surprised that they havent fixed this problem yet!:smileysurprised:
