I see. Thanks for the update! Looking forward to seeing the results of adding thermal paste! 🙂

I have applied the thermal paste but I am still getting the message of the system overheating. I dont know what else to do.

Are you sure that the fan is spinning freely? If not, check to make sure the fan cable is connected to the motherboard.

I purchased a new fan and heat sink, and I verified that it is connected to the motherboard.

Ok. I know you mentioned that it shuts down after a short period of time. I'm wondering if that could be lengthened at all. Another common cause for this error is the BIOS being outdated. Since this is a new motherboard and the BIOS is saved onto the motherboard, that could be the reason.

When you press power to turn it on, try hitting the ESC key repeatedly to enter the Startup menu. If it allows you to get that far, try entering BIOS with F10 and check the BIOS version number (should be F.0 and a number or letter). Let me know what you find there.

You've already checked all of the likely possible hardware causes. Did you happen to replace the processor or using the same one? Could it have been affected by the water spill?

I was able to get into the system information menu before it shut off. The bios version is F.23. I am using the same processor I have only replaced the motherboard, fan and heatsink.

Ok you could try cleaning and re-applying thermal paste if you have plenty left over. It could also be that either the water spill affected the processor or the heat that it has been subject to since, has affected the processor beyond the point of re-usability.

Processors can sometimes be found at pretty inexpensive prices. It all depends on how common they are and their availability in the market. I've seen processors for older (relatively older, from 2-3 years ago) models online for $15. Hopefully yours is similar. Let me know which dm4 model you have and I'll see which processor you have and provide some links for you. You can find the full model and product number on the bottom (possibly inside the battery compartment) on an HP label.

Thank you so much for your help so far. I will try reapplying the thermal paste and I will update when I get home on the product number. I know its a core i5 processor, this is frustrating me because the computer was not even turned on. It was only connected to the outlet charging, when I get home and I saw the ceiling was leaking right above it.

Oh no! That certainly sounds frustrating because there's not much you could've done to prevent that!

I was able to get the model number so its HP pavilion DM4 1265dx. I tried reapplying the thermal paste to no luck. Should I buy a processor or should I just trash it and get a new computer?
