I've been having the same problem over the past few days, except much worse. The entire system freezes/crashes and the only stable enviroment to use is safe mode. My computer only functions (at all) in normal mode if I leave it for about half an hour after logging in to my user account, only to return and find that the Synaptics driver has crashed, so I have to keep using the computer without a scroll feature. Which is tolerable, except that this only lasts until the next restart.
As for driver versions, mine is 15.0.24.0, which seems to be older than both yours and the one listed on the website as the latest version. Funny part is though, upon asking Windows (7) to check for any newer versions of my driver, it said that I already have the latest version. I've downloaded both versions (yours and the one listed on the website) and I'll try each and let you know which works, if any.
But please look into my aforementioned issue. This is clearly not normal- for an entire system to crash because of a problem arising from a single driver.

That is because HP does not care about doing things right.
They just want to make as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time - sending out products that are not properly put together.
They were good at one time.
Now their medical equipment is top notch, but when it comes to the average consumer market, the have dropped the ball.

Hello, I have a HP 440 G1 windows 7 64 bit, and many times my synaptic touchpad will disappear from the mouse properties box. Usually showing up after the 'hardware' icon. I automatically know when this is going to happen on start up. I get a set of instructions at the top of the page after startup, normally they are just at the bottom. Happens every time without fail. But even though the synaptic driver doesn't show up in the lower tool bar or the mouse properties box it is still in the program installation page. And when I run a troubleshooting page it says it is working properly. I notice it does this a lot after i hit sleep, or leave the lid closed for too long, and some times on start up. What is causing this? Is this product not compatible with windows 7 64 bit? Is there a complication in the BIOS?
