Computer was working fine. I turned it on one day and I can't click on anything. I do not use an external mouse, but I use the touchpad. I can move the mouse around, but it will not let me click anything. When this started I would try to click to open something and it will sometimes grab the icon and drag it around, but will not open it. 9 times out 10 it will not do anything. I can't open anything. I am only able to manuver around the screen using the tab key and up and down arrows.

Hi there @Robin42169,
Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums. I wanted to reach out to you and help! I understand that the TouchPad on your HP 2000-2b09WM Notebook PC is not working properly.
Have you tried to see if it happens in Safe Mode?
Have you tried to connect an external mouse to see if an external mouse works?
Have you done any Windows Updates?
Have you tried to use the HP Support Assistant for updating?
If not, here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system at the time of purchase or that need updating.
You mentioned that have updated and uninstalled drivers already however, could you please try again in this order:
- Open Device Manager
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices,
- Right Click on the TouchPad,
- Click on Uninstall,
- Restart the Notebook twice,
Check and see if the TouchPad starts to work for you now. If not, please try to update the TouchPad drivers manually:
- Click On Device Manager,
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices,
- Right Click on the TouchPad,
- Click on Update Driver Software,
- Restart your Notebook.
The best document I have for TouchPad issues is the Using and Troubleshooting the TouchPad or ClickPad document. There is a section called Enabling a TouchPad or ClickPad.
On some notebooks, the TouchPad can be turned off by pressing an on/off button located near the TouchPad which you said is not the case however, it can still be disabled in the Mouse Properties.
If you click Additional mouse settings it should bring up the Mouse Properties page. If you go to the last tab and it says Enable Devices, please click Enable Devices. That will put the settings back to default (examples below).
If it does not say to Enable Devices than the TouchPad is still on.
Have you tried to test the Hardware to see if it passes the component testing? If not, please remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues, and run the Component Test on the Mouse. Please let me know if you received an error code from the test.
Please let me know if I answered your question by clicking the 'Thumbs up' if the troubleshooting steps in this post resolved the issue for you please click the 'Accept as Solution' button. This will allow other's who have the same issue to find the solution also.
If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you.
Please re-post with the results of the troubleshooting.
Thanks!
