We've been struggling with the G5 dock in combination with the G8 Probooks for months. We had all described issues described here. Dock is not detecting the displays anymore in different situations, internal NIC of dock dropping the connections all day and Mouse and Keyboard lagging after some hours of use. All this is obviously related to the dock, as connecting devices directly to the laptop stops issues immediately. However, the G5 dock alone is not causing this as we have also recent Lenovo Laptops that never have such issues when used with the HP dock.

So, by accident we had some old G5 docks with old firmware installed and noticed users not having any problems with those. From my experience over the last 2 weeks, I can say that the following two things removes all issues mentioned:

  • Downgrade the USB-C Dock G5 to the old 2019 firmware 1.0.8.0
  • Apply all driver settings (no power saving) to the dock internal NIC

In our case (EliteBook 840 G8 + G5 docks) helped to change (disable) that power saving mode at network card and to upgrade G5 docks to the latest firmware posted here a couple of days ago. Seems like varies between the model lines.

if you give me your mail address, I can send it to you. I expected that something like this will happen - so I downloaded the firmware before 🙂

Thank you very much!

But the download link is still online, you can download the file via direct link:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp134001-134500/sp134241.exe

But I wonder why HP removed the entry from the downloads 😮 Maybe other(new?) problems with this version??

HP reinstated firmware download again it is listed now as "1.0.14.0 Rev.A"

Testing it with the "power saving disabled" on EliteBook 850 G8.

Hi!

I had the same Ethernet connection problems, even with the latest available firmware. In the end I've set every power option that I could find on the Realtek USB GbE Family Controller in the Device Manager:

  • Power Management tab -> Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device..."
  • Advanced tab -> Energy-Efficient Ethernet Disabled and Idle Power Saving Disabled

After I've set all three above options, disconnects stopped.....

Hope it helps!

I want to try this method with downgrading firmware. Can you please share 1.0.8.0. ver? You can upload it somewhere and share the link.

Hi,

We all experience this a lot with different HP Laptops model but it is not related only to the gen 5 dock.

As a part of all the chip lack on the market we were enforced to buy some HP travelling docking stations, and we face same issue with several users! I think this is related to the thunderbolt Type-C.

We get this issues 99% during teams sessions and this means when we put some stress on the network adaptor. The most common issue is disconnecting from LAN and moving to WIFI, and then it remain WIFI

Yesterday I noticed that in HP Image assistant there was a new thunderbolt driver, I installed it and now I am waiting to see if this may help. I think the issue is related to the type-C. not specifically Dock Gen5 and maybe it is also related to Realtek Issues...
