Hey everyone! I have a HP Envy d7 select edition with WIndows 8 OS. Brand new, just purchased last week. It already has a line in the screen and I don't know how to fix it. I'm also unable to access my university's network because it needs a new update (even though I just updated it and it was fine the day before.) WIndows update is not working for me. The program just freezes when I try to check for updates. I noticed the line after this occured. Thanks for any help!

Hello almondjoy12,
I see that you are having problems with a line on your screen and internet issues. I would like to help with this issue but I need some information.
Can you provide the full model and product number of the computer? Here is a link that shows how to find that information.

I have had the same issue with the screen.
I have an HP Envy dv6 with Windows 8.1, 1TB HHD, 8GB RAM, and Intel i5.
I have several vertical dotted lines along the left side of the screen. The number of lines seems to decrease after a restart but never completely go away. The number of lines also seems to increase with or be related to the connection of external monitors. My assumption is that when the screen resizes, while connecting to the external monitors, it momentarily overlaps with the built in display and leaves a line of misrepresented pixels.
The lines are on the left side of the built-in display as I defined in Windows "Screen Resolution" manager. The lines do not appear on the external monitors and the lines remain on the built-in screen even after disconnecting the exteral monitors and all other peripherals.
The "lines" are verticle colums of pixels in which ever other, or maybe every third pixel, is white. Sometimes, the white pixels are slightly shaded to match the pixels around itself. These lines are often grouped in an area about a centimeter wide and start about a half centimeter from the leftmost edge of the screen.

Hi there @alphy13
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you are seeing pixels on one sude of the built in display, and that external monitors connected to the notebook are fine. I am happy to help with this.
Please post the full product number for your notebook. See the following, if you need help with that information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Since the lines do not appear on the external displays, it shows that your notebooks graphic adapter is good, and also your driver. It may be a setting for the resolution of your primary display, but it is more likely that the display is going bad. But to help determine which it is, take a look at the following pages and see if anything matches, or helps to resolve the issue.

Thank you for your reply and the additional information.
I did some more searching and found a few seemingly strange methods that some people mentioned worked for them on other notebook forums. There were several people who wrote that they applied a little pressure to the frame at the bottom of the display below where the lines appeared, and it went away for them.
To me that would just mean that there is something either loose, or pressing on the display panel within its frame. Try it and see if there is any change. If there is, then I think it would be worthwhile to use the maintenance guide to look at the panel and see if something is out of place and also to check the ribbon cable between the panel and the mainboard.
HP ENVY dv6 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide
Using the guide you will find the instructions on how to replace the panel on page 103 of 130. The same instructions are just as useful to just check the panel and inspect the connections.
Let me know if you find anything, or if it helps remove the lines.

@Malygris1
Pressing on the bottom left corner of the screen causes more lines to appear. These additional lines dissapear when pressure is removed. Restarting the computer decreases the number of lines.
I am more than comfortable opening the computer to check the wiring and connections, but I worry that doing so will void the warranty. How can I check to see if my computer is still covered under warranty?
Thank you,
Alphy13

I certainly understand your concerns, and we normally give the service manual as an option for those that are more comfortable with computer "surgery". If you are under warranty, you can make arrangements for a repair, but I would be sure to back up your data first.
