the laptop came back with the exact same fault, the laptop is going back to HP, and we are discussing compensation

Same happened with me twice....

Tried the BCDEDIT option, machine was significantly slower on start up. Most impact has been updating INTEL PCI drivers, at least this stopped the never ending stream of logged errors. Still get a single entry on cold boot and a large burst on a restart but this is significantly better than the starting point.

@gabecrash, no not yet and don't think i will as according to HP, they don't give cash refund, so i have asked for compensation value from HP that is double the cost of what i paid for the unit.
