Yesterday I was updating drivers to my G62-144dx hardware from intel, then I checked if there was an updated driver to the wifi adapter Atheros AR9285 and found one through HP the updated driver to 10.0.0.200, unsure if there are two zeros or one, typing this from a desktop. Well after going through the process of installing that my wifi was gone. I rolledback the driver to previous nothing changed. Uninstalled hardware and driver, nothing changed. I have tried everything I know and cannot correct my error. Wifi was working fine before this and I screwed it up. I went through the windows wireless detection problem solution fix program and nothing fixed. Please help me!

Hi @dep129

I understand that you no longer have wifi after trying to update the driver. I am happy to help.

You mentioned trying to rollback the driver install, and that it did not work. Did you also try a system restore to just before you installed the driver? If not give it a try.

Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7)

When you say the wifi is gone, does the wireless adapter show up in device manager? If it does you can try out the following things in sequence.

Troubleshooting Your Wireless Network and Internet Connection (Windows 7)

Also, you can look at the power management for your wireless adaptor:
Disable the Power Off option for the adapter:
1. Open Device Manager. (Win Key+R > type devmgmt.msc > OK)
2. Expand the Network adapters.
3. Right click on the Ethernet/Wireless Adapter and click Properties.
4. Click the Power Management tab.
5. Remove the check mark beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
6. Click OK.
7. Test.

Forget the network: (Windows 7)
1. Press Start.
2. Type Manage wireless networks and click the application at the top of the start menu.
3. Right click on the network and click Remove network.
4. Confirm the warning by click OK.

Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:
1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.

It may also help to reset the winsock catalogue:
1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.

Reinstall the network adapter drivers:
1. Download the drivers from here but do not run them yet.
2. Go to your start screen/menu and type Device Manager.
3. Expand Network adapters.
4. Right click on the wireless adapter and choose Uninstall.
5. Run the downloaded drivers from step 1.
6. Restart your PC and test.

Hello @Malygris, thank you for responding to my message.

I tried System Restore two times, for two different dates. System Restore was not successful.

The Wifi adapter does show up in device manager. Currently it's listed as ' Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n Wifi Adapter #4' I don't know why it shows #4, unless that is because of my uninstall & reinstall attempts. It had no number when working properly.

There is a red X over the 5 bars where wifi signal would be. There are no networks available.

Have tried all except the last of your suggestions and none of them were able to solve the problem. I do appreciate the effort you're making to help solve my wifi problem. I'll have to connect to an ethernet cable in order to download drivers. Before I do that, can you find and post the proper, updated driver for me to download?

Hello again @dep129

You can find all the drivers for your system in this location:

HP G62-144DX Notebook PC Drivers

As to the network adapter, you can check for multiples in device manager as follows:

Type devmgmt.msc in the  'Search box' and press the <Enter> key

To include hidden devices in Device Manager display, click View and select Show Hidden Devices.

Locate and Expand 'Network Adapters' category  - check if there are multiple entries of the Network adapter, if so you can uninstall them all, and then scan for new devices.

Then use the driver from the page I linked above.

When i followed your instructions only one atheros adapter was listed. So I took a picture. When you see the picture, does anything appear abnormal? Do I need to delete any of the ISATAP adapter #s?LG 025.jpg

@Malygris1 Today I uninstalled the adapter and restarted the notebook, it took away the #4. Now there is a red X over what looks like an ethernet connection icon. Do you have more suggestions to try?

@dep129

Assuming that what you removed were any duplicates of the Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n Wifi Adapter that may have showed up when you followed the method of displaying any hidden devices, then just be sure the correct driver is loaded for the device.

If you removed all of them first, you scan for hardware changes and it should find the device, and then you need to install or update the driver from the support website. HP G62-144DX Notebook PC Drivers.  Select the correct operating system  for the driver page.

Once the network card is showing correctly, then you can again to see if you can connect to your wireless.

I have now completed all of listed suggestions, and still no improvement. Yesterday I had gone into the BIOS and saw that the 'Internal Network Adapter' was disabled, so I enabled it. Didn't change anything. Last night I found that there was a Atheros diagnostic program on my notebook. Here is the copy and paste of the result:

Driver installation test
This test is to check the radio driver installation.
The radio's registry keys are OK.
Nic name. . . . . . . . . : Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
Driver name . . . . . . . : ATHRX
Driver path . . . . . . . : C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\athrx.sys
Driver version. . . . . . : 10.0.0.67
Active Profile Name . . : Not Found

The radio driver has been installed.

Card insertion test
This test is to check the card insertion.

The card has been inserted.

Card enable test
This test is to check if the radio/driver is enabled.

The card is not enabled
Enable the card.

Association test
This test is to check your client adapter's association to an access point.
Link Status . . . . . . . : Not Associated

Your client adapter is not associated to an access point.
Configure the radio card and set SSID and other properties.

Authentication test
This test is to check authentication.

Authentication test bypassed, because authentication is not in use.

Network test
This test is to check your network settings.

You have not configured your computer to use the client adapter.
Use the Network icon in the System Preferences application
to set the network configuration for your client adapter.

I sure hope that this tells you what's wrong, and we can fix this.

Hi @Malygris1

Have you had a chance to view my last reply and if you have, do you have any thoughts as to what's wrong with the wireless adapter? I don't know what to read into the Atheros troubleshooter. Do I need to purchase a replacement wireless card?

If I do indeed need to replace the wireless card, I have looked at my notebooks manual and it lists replacement parts . I have searched for the listed cards and they're not available new, or from the HP part store. I've read that HP notebooks are limited to specific wireless adapters/cards because of the BIOS/whitelist. It would be nice if there is a newer part that is compatible yet not listed in the 2010 manual.

Sorry for missing your previous post. I had another one like that today.

Before thinking of replacing the wireless card,  try this which is directly related to what you describe. I should have posted it before. Resolving Universal WLAN, Wireless, and Wi-Fi Errors

If a replacement is required, then the main thing is to find one that is compatible. Of course the manual includes the devices that were tested and are supported for this model. It normally is because the drivers are generally modified for compatibility with a set of hardware. It is always possible to try something else, but it is like going into unexplored territory. It is never guaranteed to work, or that the drivers would be compatible, but it is not impossible either.

For now, try that page I posted. Going through it, it will generally tell you whether the card needs to be replaced. But it also can help fix it.

Let me know how it goes.
