Windows 8 drivers for HP notebooks with switchable graphics.

what's the purpose of updating the AMD driver?

Brandiu(the guy who started this thread) said he got switchable graphics working on his notebook  with  the intel drivers provided by microsoft. What am getting from the newer posts is that the switching part is found in the intel graphics driver. That means it(the intel driver) has to be modified by AMD or HP.

is the driver provided by microsoft modified for switchable graphics?

i had tried the official 12.10 on my dv7 4285dx and it installed. The catalyst control was also there and working. But i uninstalled it since i couln't find where i could do the switching manually. On windows 7 i used to just right click on the desktop and select 'configure switchable graphics'. Am learning from this thread that this(doing a clean install of the AMD drivers) was the solution.(i haven't tried it yet).

I updated the AMD driver manually from the device manager because after the Catalyst Control Center software update it installed a driver for my Radeon card that reported it was a Radeon HD 7400 when in fact it was a Radeon HD 6490. So, after the manual update of the driver, it again reports back as a Radeon HD 6490.

Also, I can run my switchable graphics as you noted by right clicking on the desktop.

And I would recommend a uninstall of any previous versions of the catalyst software before installing a new version which is what I did.

I installed windows 8 pro in my hp dv6 laptop.Its working properly but it is not supporting ATI graphic card .

I tried AMD driver autodectecting software.but it didnt find any solution.

When will HP  or amd upload new driver to support graphic card in windows 8.

I wouldn;t advise you to do anything else, till the official windows 8 drivers are made by HP for our laps.

You're correct, the autodetecting won't work. It didn't work for me. Go to the page from the link below and pick the appropriate catalyst software for your machine. There may be no official HP software or driver updates coming to you especially for laptops made before October 2011.

Make sure to uninstall any previous versions of the Catalyst software first. After installing this go back to the Device Manager in Control Panel and select the Radeon HD card and manually update the driver by letting it search the Internet for the best driver. You can do this by simply right clicking on it.

So you have a Radeon HD 6000 series card. Go to the following AMD site and download the appropriate Beta Catalyst software for you version of Windows 8(ie 32 bit or 64 bit). It will be under this section:

"Latest AMD Catalyst™ Drivers for Radeon™ HD 7000, HD 6000 and HD 5000 Series"

In fact, I recommend selecting the link for the "Latest Beta Driver".

During the install you have the option to uninstall any previous versions of the catalyst software you installed. If you have upgraded to Windows 8 and haven't added any catalyst software you don't need to uninstall any since the Windows 8 install did NOT reinstall it. Thats the reason the switchable graphcs doesn't work. HP didn't provide updated catalyst software for Windows 8 to Microsoft. BUT, AMD has new software that does work in many cases.

After you install the catalyst software you may need to go into device manager and update the driver for the Radeon HD card if it reports back with a different model number than the one you have. Simply right click on the Radeon HD graphics card under the display adapters (in device manager) and select "Update Driver Software". Then choose the option that automatically searches for the best one (including the internet). It should then update it.

Either way, once the Catalyst software is installed, right clicking on the desktop should now allow you to run the swtichable graphics. You'll see it at the top of the list.

You're correct. Installing the latest catalyst software from AMD solves the switchable graphics problem. During the install of the AMD catalyst software is usually installs a driver for the Radeon Cards that might not be the latest for you Radeon HD card. So, after the install of the catalyst software from AMD, I recommend going into the device manager (in control panel) and opeining the display adapter tab and "right clicking" on the Radeon HD card and selecting "update diriver software".

But, even if you don't do this, I found (in my case the) installation of the AMD catalyst software restored the switchable graphics functionality.

This thread is now 46+ pages long. Most people don't have time to even begin to read every post. The original poster simply pointed us in the right direction. Somewhere in these posts I found info that points to HP not updating the catalyst software for Windows 8 for HP PC's manufactured before October 2011. So, believing I might be waiting a long time (or never), I decided to take a chance and go to AMD and use their Beta Catalyst Control Center Software in hopes of getting the switchable graphics working again. In my case it worked.

You all have to make your own decisions but I chose to chance it. If your Windows 8 upgrade disbaled your switchable graphics functionality, this means it did NOT reinstall the Catalyst Control Center Software, so you now don't have any catalyst software. So, if you try the AMD Beta software and it doesn't work, you can uninstall it. There is no risk since you don't have any software to run the switchable graphics anyway.

As a general note, after my upgrade to Windows 8, it took me nearly 3+ weeks to get all the functionality back I had before my upgrade from Windows 7. It's just kind of how PC's are and being a patient sort of person who is somewhat of a geek, I took it all in stride. My HP Pavialion is again running great and Kicking a$$ and all my apps are working fine and I have begun to really like WIndows 8 and I am now very glad I upgraded. But, to each his own.
