This is what worked for me:----
Start the device manager.
Select the wireless driver.
uninstall this - but don't delete the driver files in the dialog box.
Restart windows - as stated before in one of the previous articles, windows installs the driver automatically.
The orange lamp now turns blue....
I unplugged the network cable, re-connected to he wireless router and I'm now posting this comment via wireless

Hey jaytp,
There are a few suggested fixes for this issue. If you've already tried the Uninstall and Restart the Computer method, try the following:
1. Open Device Manager
2. Expand Network Adapters
3. Double-click on the Ralink card
4. Change setting to Enabled
5. Click Apply and restart if prompted.
You could also try reseating your wireless card.
Let me know if you run into any questions 🙂

Thanks for this fix edsilha--this one worked for me when others on this thread did not.
I have to add, it actually disabled my computer first--after the default reset, a message came up that the computer could not start up and would I like to do a system restore. I went ahead and did this and after about a half hour on that dialogue box it did reboot and the wifi was enabled. I put the battery back in and did another shutdown and restart to make sure it worked with the battery in and everything seems to be okay now.
Important thing to mention: I am on an HP Pavillion g6 running Windows 7 Home Premium--this problem started when the system did an auto update. The internet switch worked fine up to that time. A standard system restore from Windows did NOT fix the problem. I tried several things on this thread before trying the option below, which worked only after doing another system restore.
