I can't believe the amount of people that are experiencing this problem until I ran into this problem just yesterday.
I have a hp dv7 pavilion notebook that I purchased about 3 years ago. All of a sudden, the wifi button goes orange on me and would not change no matter how much I pressed. Looking back, for me, it was a combination of old bios/software and new updates that are coming in from Windows which broke the computer.
So after reading these long threads, I went ahead and updates my bios to the latest version. In addition, I also updated my Broadcom driver and Realtek driver to be the latest because all 3 were out of date. After installing the updates, wifi would not work still after rebooting. How frustrating! Then I decided to go into the BIOS menu and do a restore default and voila, wifi starts to work again.
In short, for my case, I do need a restore default step forthe bios in order to work. That is after updating bios to the latest version.

Hi I have also been having this problem. I turned my wifi off for travelling on a flight and when I tried to turn it on once I arrived, the button would not change from being orange and I cannot connect to the internet or use bluetooth as the network adapterwill not turn on.
Laptop: HP Pavilion dm4
My network adapter: broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n
BIOS : F.27 - 12/21/2011 ( 058B110000242B10000020100 )
Any help would be fantastic!

@cattybee
I'm sorry you're running into this wireless issue. Thanks for providing those details. It would also help to have your product number since different dm4 models can have different BIOS version.
I'll also take your wireless driver version number. You can find that in Device Manager
1. [Windows 8] Press Windows key + X
[Windows 7] Click Start and type 'device'
2. Click Device Manager
3. Expand Network Adapters
4. Double-click on Broadcom 4313
5. Click the Driver tab and let me know which version number is shown there. I'll check to see if it is up-to-date.
Uninstall and Reinstall the Wirelss Driver
6. Click the Uninstall button, click OK and Restart Now when prompted.
During the restart, Windows will automatically detect and reinstall the missing driver. This should sort out any software issues if the driver is up-to-date. If it is not, I'll link you to the latest version available on your HP Driver Page.
You can also try setting the BIOS to defaults (as mentioned above).
1. Shutdown
2. Press the Power button and immediately start tapping F10 repeatedly until you see the BIOS screen.
3. Press F9 once you're in BIOS. You won't see a progress bar or anything. Just press F9 once.
4. Then press F10 to Save and Exit. Yes to confirm.
Then the computer will load Windows normally. Test the wireless button and let me know the results 🙂

Hey Naruthoninjaqiu,
I'm sorry you're running into this internet issue.
If Ethernet is not working either, you've got more than a wireless driver issue. A lot of times when neither wireless nor Ethernet working, is caused by antiviruses conflicting with each other. What antivirus, anti-malware, anti-rootkit, system cleaner, or other security software do you have running? There may be some running on startup without your knowledge of it. Check your start up list in msconfig.
1. Click Start
2. Type 'msconfig'
3. Click on msconfig.exe
4. Click the Startup tab
5. Note each security software that is checked. Uncheck all security software, but one.
Restart and let me know the results when you get a chance 🙂

Also wanted to mention that I'm seeing F.48 as the recommended BIOS version.
Download and install the version above. During the installation, your computer will restart on its own. Allow it to restart and get back to the Desktop. Try the wireless button.
