cannot activate windows 8.1

can someone please help me, I have carried out a factory restore of my Pavillion laptop, but cannot get Windows 8.1 activated. I called the microsoft activation centre, but they are saying the activation key i have is a Volume Licence Key and cannot be used to activate my windows.

This is the original key that was supplied when i boughtthis laptop, but cannot get it to activate. I have tried to contact HP direct but getting absolutely no joy whatsoever
