I'm working on a HP Envy Touchsmart notebook. Model number is 15-j057cl. It had a serious hard drive crash, and I'm in the process of reloading it using the USB recovery stick from HP since there's no CD/DVD drive. Running Windows 8.
All the drivers are loaded. I've got internet connectivity via a wireless network, but not via the wired one. All other PCs in my office are working just fine, both wired and wireless. The wired network shows up as an unidentified network, and is a public network. I've hunted all over Microsoft and HP to figure out how to get it connected, identified, and classified as a private network. I've got link lights on both the notebook and the network switch. I've switched the Cat5e cable with a good one I'm using on another PC, and still have the issue.
The Realtek PCIe GBE wired NIC is not getting DNS information, as it keeps coming up with the default Microsoft IP of 169.254.64.151.
Any help would be appreciated. Wireless connectivity is fine when you're mobile, but in the stationery office environment, I need the speed of the wired connection.

Hi RalphJones,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I see you are having some connectivity issues with your Ethernet connection. As to making a network private all you need to do is put a password on the network. You would have to talk to your whoever supplied your wireless router.
We are going to try a couple of things. First let's make sure that you are not trying to use a Proxy server. Follow the steps below for that.
Step 1: Open your Internet Explorer from your Desktop not from the Apps page
Step 2. Click the Tools button , and then click Internet options
Step 3. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings
Step 4. Select the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box
Step 5. In the Address box, type the address of the proxy server
Step 6. Check "Automatically detect settings"
Step 7. When you're finished making changes
Step 8. Click OK, and then click OK again
Next hold down the Windows Key and 'R' to open the Run command and then type cmd and hit Enter. This will bring up your Command Prompt and type ipconfig and hit Enter. Write down the Default Gateway as this will be your router. Then use the Ping and DNS Server Problems section of this howtogeek.com document to see if you can reach the router's webpage.
If you can't reach the router then we will look at reseting the TCP/IP stack. Go back to your Command Prompt and type in netsh winsock reset catalog and hit Enter. Then type in netsh int ip reset reset.log and hit Enter. Then restart your computer. This will reinstall the internet protocols on your computer in case it was corrupted.
