Hi.
When I start my chromebook it doesn't boot up, the screen stays black (but lit) and I can hear the fan. After 15 seconds or so it seems to restart itself and comes up with the error message that chrome OS is missing or damaged.
I've tried reinstalling froma recovery image using different USBs and trying a hard reset but nothing worked. Google reckon it's a hardware issue.
When I press tab the recovery reason is "0x5a no bootable storage device in system". Any thoughts on what the problem is?

Hi @lawbow ,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a fabulous place to find answers and information!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I grasp that when you try to start your : hp 14 q050na you receive the error " chrome OS is missing or damaged" and does not start.
Here is a link to Chromebook Does Not Start (Chrome OS) that should assist you.
Linux is not a supported Operating System by HP. If the above has not helped here is a link to the Frequently Asked Questions About Linux (FAQs)
Here are two more links that may also be of assistance. Use the Chromebook Recovery Utility
As you stated you believe it could be hardware here is a link to Troubleshooting hardware issues using diagnostics
I hope this has helped.
Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

Thank you for your reply and your warm welcome.
You have correctly understood my problem.
Unfortunately I have already tried the potential options from those links but to no avail. I have tried to perform a recovery several times using different USBs but at the end it always says that "an unexpected error has occurred. I have also tried a hard reboot but that didn't help.
Is there anything else to try when receiving this error message? I haven't been able to find any other options here or elsewhere on the web.
I should have specified in my original post that I'm not running linux, I'm running chrome OS but it wasn't possible to choose that as an option when specifying my operating system in my initial post.
Unfortunately all the hardware diagnostic tools on the link you provided require signing in which is not possible because I am stuck at the error screen.
Is there any way to run hardware diagnostics when you can't log in?
The thing that made google think it was a hardware issue was when I told them that pressing tab on the "chrome is missing or damaged screen" brought up the error message "0x5a no bootable storage device in system".
From searching the web it appears most people get this error message after trying to replace the SSD. Although I haven't tried to replace anything it seems to suggest to me that the problem might be with the SSD.
Are there any other problems that would bring up this error message?
Thanks again.

Thanks again. Unfortunately I live in Russia but don't speak the language well enough to communicate with a support team. Do you know if it is possible for me to contact a support team in a different country by email?
