I was attempting to boot up my HP Notebook 15-d020dx from DVD so I could run Windows Defender offline to clean up some malware that had made its way onto my computer. Despite the occasional malware annoyance, the computer was working PERFECTLY FINE up until then. No issues. We discovered that it would not boot up in UEFI boot mode, so we disabled that and enabled legacy boot mode in the F10 Boot Menu and changed the DVD boot to be first followed by hard drive boot. As soon as we did that we re-booted the computer but it would NOT boot up. The fan turned on. The disk drive whirred for a few seconds, the screen turned light grey, but would not boot up. We tried turning it off, then on while hitting F10, then turning it on again while hitting Esc. No luck. Then we did a hard reset by holding the power button down for 15 seconds with the battery, AC adapter, and all peripherals removed. Tried to restart while hitting either Esc or F10. No luck. Called HP Tech support and they had us REPEAT all these things. No luck. All we did was switch from UEFI to Legacy and this happened. How could a hardware problem have developed in that moment? It was working fine right up until that time. What can I do?

@Link74 ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums. Yes you are correct your system will not boot into windows 8 or 8.1 while your BIOS setting is in Legacy mode. Legacy mode is what you should have your BIOS set for Windows XP, Vista, 7. When your wanting to roll up into Windows 8 and above it is looking for the Secure boot settings. UEFI boot mode. Here are some links you may want to check out.
About UEFI and the Startup Menu
Boot UEFI or Legacy ---- tips Thanks to @Big_Dave ,
The list goes on. However the bottom line is you may want to recover your BIOS so here is a link that may help you with that.
I would attempt recovering your BIOS back to the way it was.
I hope this helps. Thank you again for posting and have a great day.
