ok there is a lot of information here so whatever little you can provide will be helpful im open to a lot of ideas here

I would like to upgrade my laptop hardware
I am really confused on the issues of compatability
bewtween chipset-bios-pin and socket size-bus speed etc
etc. i have been looking at memory through crucial and
some ssd drives. I wish to upgrade the processor as well
and the video card if possible. lastly if cost efficient
i would like to put a custom board that would fit my
case. this is a project that I am trying to plan out very
meticuallsy so if you want to advise me to just buy a new laptop
i am not really intristed. yes money is an issue but i enjoy taking
on new challanges that I am not familiar with.
Once again I am having problems with figuring out compatibility
and picking the best hardware that will get get everything out of the
board. that is why i also am possibly considering buying a new board
any advice or if someone could point me in the best direction
i dont think i can chat with hp being out of warranty and I am having
trouble with figuring out all of the diffrent varities and versions/revisons of hardware
Thank you very much in advance

Hi,

You are talking about upgrading a whole machine here. Do you know the cost would be DOUBLE of the cost of buyng a new machine ? At the end, you still have an uncompleted machine.

Hope this helps.

Here is the HP Pavilion dv6500, dv6600, and dv6700 Entertainment PCs - Maintenance and Service Guide for your computer. It has everything you want to know about the computer and more.

It is unlikely that you will be able to change the motherboard, video card, or CPU. The mother board and case are a matched pair... nothing else is going to fit. The video card is most likely part of the motherboard and can't be replaced. The Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 CPU already in your computer appears to be the maximum supported CPU for the system.

On the plus side, you can upgrade to 4GB (2 x 2GB DIMMs) of PC2-5300, DDR2 (667-MHz) RAM. You can also upgrade to a larger SATA2 2.5-inch x  9.5-mm hard drive or SSD. However, if you use a SSD, you may not see the full benifit of the drive.

are you sure about the processor being the fastest supported I might be mistaken but i thought there was like a 9000x or something similiar

are you sure about the processor and video card    The video card is Nivida and i was under the impression it was not imbedded as well as the processor not being integrated but if it is the best i can use i guess i will have to accept it i have upgrade the bios from hp now i was wondering if i can flash a new bios over it very novice user but do take time to research in full before i do.   and what would be your recomondations on ssd vs regualr hard disk if capcity is not an issue

what limitations are my board putting on the data transfer would i be better off getting a standard disk

Thank you so so much for your time

Hi,

Well as I menioned above, you CAN upgrade and replace everything WITH YOUR MONEY if you willing to pay twice the top rate laptop now I can show you how. For the video card basically you can, with a cost and I believe this cost may be more expensive than buying a new computer because you have to take into account:

  • New card price,  and WHERE you can buy it because laptop cards are not the same as desktop cards. You can't buy from any normal shop,
  • Need new system board (may be),
  • Need new cooling system because generally speaking more powerfull card pumps out more heat (you want more powerfull card don't you?).
  • May need new PSU because your current PSU may not suitbale to the card. (I ordered a machine with Nvidia card and I needed to order a 90W charger at the same time, not the normal 65W charger. They simply rejected my order).
  • Labor cost.
  • Many, many packets of Asprin.

Hope this helps.

Forget graphics as nothing can be done to upgrade on your BGA Nvidea chip & mainboard arangement.

CPU can be upgraded  & a few possible options are available,  a T7700 would be cheap & safe option but few of the T8xxx & even T9xxx may wok if BIOS has a wide enough model distribution & thus inbuilt support for them.

Other worthwhile options would be the 4GB RAM upgrade & an SSD such as Samsung 830 would be cost effective choice for sata capability of your mainboard. you could use the DVD Rom drive as a second HDD bay with a converter caddy that retail at around 10USD making use of old HDD & cheaper purchase of smaller capacity SSD.

If take your time to source good parts at great prices it would not be that expensive & not that slow a machine if setup with a good generic Windows 7 install & probably far more reliable than a lot of the new junk people rave about ...

Thermal issues too can be improved with correct preload shimming of CPU & GPU heatsinks & a second 25mm or 35mm max 5v fan mounted in the ram coverto extract hot air  with additional case intake vents helps lower temps around 20% & improve reliability further.

Do a lot of mods based on these boards here in Thailand as so so cheap to buy due to huge amount of notebook failures & huge amount of hardware that can be used to improve them.

Hi jared6445, I can tell you right now from experience and searching the Hp website, that your Laptop will support the Intel Core 2 Mobile Processor T9500 (best available and compatible to buy for your laptop). PLEASE NOTE that this is only if your Bios version is at least F.45 or later.

You can check your Bios version by clicking on the Windows Icon (located on the left-hand bottom corner of the screen), and typing in "msinfo32" (without the quotes) and it will be on the screen that pops up, next to "BIOS Version/Date."

YOU MUST flash your Bios to F.45 or later ONLY ON Windows VISTA or XP operating systems, or your laptop will become permanently damaged.

The F.45 Bios version is located on this page with the later releases also (I recommend flashing your Bios to the F.58 version).
