Did you ensure your USB drive was actually bootable? It's nothing HP did that prevented you from booting from USB...

Even though there's no field to enter the number, and will not show anything being typed, it will still register your input. Type the numbers using the keys across the top of your keyboard (as opposed to the number pad to the right) and press Enter, and it will work.

I had to disable secure boot first, then save and reboot. Then asked to enter a 4 digit pin + enter to confirm. Then I enabler legacy after. Then pressed save and rebooted. Then I was able to boot from usb drive

Ibico, the issue is not booting from USB, but making an entire external hard drive available for use when booted from USB. It seems NTFS-formatted drives are restricted from use by BIOS. Fat-32 formatting does not allow enough useable space for my purpose (32 gb).

To be honest, I'm about ready to sell this HP laptop and buy something different, just because of this issue. I don't like restrictions that force me to use proprietary software.

ACTUALLY... This is NOT an HP problem - it DOES WORK! It seems to have issues with USB 3.0 pre-boot but if you use the USB port on the right side of the laptop, which is a USB 2.0 port only, and you have legacy support on, it works fine.

GeekNerd, if only that were the case. That is one of the possibilities I tested for, and using USB 2.0 ports did not change the outcome.

Pressing F9 at boot menu does not work most of the times, because the bios doesn't recognise the usb drive. 20% of the times, the usb drive appears (among other options) to be selected, 80% of the times we have 3 options (SO of internal hdd, EFI file and internal hard drive), but usb device is not listed. This happens with all my booteable usb sitcks (and usb hard drives) in all the HP laptops I have (including Envy 17).

With usb booteable devices, work perfectly on other laptops (tested on Asus and IBM), but in hp Envy is not recognized 80% of the times. Happens with many usb sticks and usb hard drives.

This has happened to me too! It didn't read the flash drive for countless times then it just suddently worked.

I am now able to boot from the USB Drive.

Still having problems fixing the PC though.

I found the only thing that works is to get into the BIOS and Disable Secure Boot, then Enable Legacy Boot.  Restart and immediatley hit the ESC key until the Boot Options appear.  Select USB and it should show up.
