Hi,
You probably need to format the new HDD - try the following.
Hold down the Windows Key and press R. Into the Run Box type compmgmt.msc and hit enter. Click Disk Management in the left pane and let the drives load up. Right click on your new HDD and select Format to start the Wizard. Windows 7 will assign a Volume Label so if your happy with this, just leave the default one. File system is normally NTFS. Allocation Unit Size should be left as the default value. Select the option to perform a Quick Format if it is not already selected. Leave any other settings as default and click Ok and Ok again to start the process.
When this has completed, your new HDD should now appear when you look under Computer.
Regards,
DP-K

I have a similar problem with my 1TB portable drive. I used my drive for over an year, and now it has started giving problems.
First it failed to copy content to and from the drive. Certain files on disc could not be read back. Trying to read lead to auto disconnecting of disc. Further, now the system does not even recognizes the disc.. It shows to be connected, and some noise of disc being accessed can be heared, buut no drives are listed.
Most disgusting part is that there is NO support available for this product segment. No call center number, no email support, even the warranty check tab does not recognize the product.
And dear Mr DAVIDPK, thank you for the 'formatting' option. What about the DATA?
Guess i need to buy a Segate portable to backup my backup on HP portable...
PATHETIC EXPERIENCE...

Alright, happened to my HDD now. It's HP SimpleSave pd1000a 1 TB external harddrive. Was working perfectly until one morning it decided to pack up. No damage at all, I carry it with my laptop everywhere I go and it was in perfect shape before going dead all of a sudden. It's full, so i'm slightly worried about losing my data too. Approximately 900 Gb worth of data is obviously important.
Sadly, HP doesn't let me check it's warranty. The cover says it's upto 3 years so that should mean I still have 1 year's warranty left.(Purchased in 2011) HP hasn't got the product listed on it's catalog. Upon trying to contact the tech. support, it lists the support form under printers.
I misplaced my bill (Still looking for it everywhere I can think of). I do have the product in my hand, it has a P/N code, S/N Code, Model number and everything on it. I also have the box it came in. That too has all the serials and product numbers though it doesn't have a 6-7 digit alpha numeric product number that HP is requesting. The product number (WDBACZ0010BBK-00) isn't accepted by HP's website.
The drive won't work on any PC I connect it to. It keeps whirling. ( No clicking sounds so that should mean there isn't a problem, right?) The light used to blink when I used it earlier. Now it stays on continuously. The disk does show up on the disk management tab, but shows up as 100% free and when I try to format it, it says that the formatting failed. The file system is listed as RAW.
The service center I have near my place says I need the invoice before taking in the disk. The retailer says they can't provide duplicate bills though i'll try asking them again. All in all, I think HP might not be able to provide me with any support with a device that they sold which is still supposed to be under warranty. Sad really.... I've had 2 HP laptops so far, this HDD, multiple flashdrives and 2 printers. It's unfortunate to say that I might not buy another HP product after this. I've had issues with all of the others and HP provided no services for any of them.

Hello Everyone!
I dont know if this is too late. But I had the same problem with my hp product too. The HP warrant check page wont accept your serial number. This is beacuse this is actually a product made by Western digital, it is just rebranded and sold by HP. The warranty will be homoured by WD. Just go the WD warranty page and register the product.
It works fine 🙂 They have a good customer service and they will replace the product for you.
Hope this helps someone!
Thanks
