The ribbon arrived today and the problem was fixed with a new Ribbon, I placed everything back and its nothing but cheap toy plastic parts, some of the cheapest product I have dealt with. I highly urge you spread to family and friends never to purchase an HP notebook again, this thread has 50,000 views. This should be shared on all social networks to ensure no one else falls victim to this company, its so sad they couldnt even honor the warranty, especially for those who had a few days over, while they knew there was a serious issue with their notebook.

Lenovo gives standard 3 year warranty now, and I assure you, nothing will happen to it for many years after. I have posted on my FB page never to purchase anything from this company other then printers . F HP.

Average price is $5, each auction has sold 80 to 200 of these and plenty of auctions online for this cable, it highlight the amount of damage this company has caused.

The cable number and a source for purchasing should be inserted on the front page to avoid forum members digging through 11 pages of rants to reach a part number.

I've had the DV4000 for more than three years and it just experienced it's first problem. The screen went blank. Even a reboot won't fix it. No lights or symptoms that I can relay to you.

I also have the hinge problem that shows up as a crack in the left corner of the screen's back cover. That is a flaw caused by opening and closing the laptop. It takes time but it will appear. The stress on that back cover is too much for the tensil strength of the cover material. Over time it will crack but it didn't affect the laptop performance.

I plugged the laptop into an external monitor and it worked so I used it as a temporary desk top. You can also do this if you want to move your data from the hard drive onto an external drive.

I replaced the rear cover and identified the black-screen problem as caused by a bad inverter. The first one ordered was incorrect so I've ordered the correct part and am waiting for it to come in.

I'll let you all know if it fixes the problem. Meanwhile, plug the laptop into a desktop monitor and see if it works. That should isolate the problem for you all a bit more.

I have a HP Pavillion dv4. It will power on but the screen is black. The lights over the number lock and caps lock keys are both flashing at the same time. I have tried the suggestion to remove the battery pack and hold down the power but for 40 seconds, then only powered up with the AC plug, but no luck. Same set of flashing lights every 3 seconds.

Can anyone help or make a suggestion on how to fix? Or am I doomed?

Try plugging the unit into an external monitor. Hit F key that switches to external monitor. If it works, it's either the inverter or the bulb in the screen that is required to back-light the screen. Inverters are cheap. Start with that. If it doesn't work, it's the screen or it's bulb. Replace the whole screen as it comes with the bulb. The bulb is av pain to swap out.

The solution given worked. I had a black screen after switching on the laptop. wifi light was on so i new the laptop has loaded the softwares.  I just removed the battery and the power mains, pressed the power on button for a minute. Then connected the power mains and switched on the laptop and it worked normally.
