I have a brand new Pavilion dv6 notebook and the battery simply doesn't work. When it is plugged into the power supply, it works perfectly but shows "plugged in and not charging". I ran the HP battery test and it simply says "unknown". It seems like a clear case of a faulty battery to me, but I just wanted to see if anybody else has any other ideas. Thanks

Ah wow Manjunath, I think you've fixed it. I did exactly as you said and it's now starting to charge like normal.
Can I just ask, is this likely to happen again? I'm going abroad for a year tomorrow and I'm slightly worried about it.
Honestly, thank you so much. You've really made my day!

Thank you dear Manjunath for your repair explanation, hopefully the resolution will work for my unique problem as well. I will try this today. Meanwhile please confirm if you have any other resolution for my below mentioned problem.
From past two days, I am observing an unusual behaviour in my HP Pavillion DV6700 laptop which I took during 2008. The AC power plug is connected to docket as On and the power is going into the computer as the side of the pin, the blue light is glowing, the battery is showing charing as the LED light is Blinking when the plug is switched on near Touchpad, however, in the computer screen in the Battery area on Right hand extreme down, it is showing, "Plugged in, Charging", however actually is not charging. If my battery is showing 45%, it is 45% for more than an hour. It's a first time occurance I could observed from last two days in so many years. Also, as soon as I disconnected the plug to check, automatically, the computer shuts down. Anyone else in the forum experienced the similar situation. Kindly update the resolution. Also, the HP experts, please let me know if at all this is the problem with the battery and needs a replacement :mansad::smileysad:
I love my HP lappy :heart:and don't want to change it. Please help me in fixing the problem. I am a computer illeterate and don't know anything about Hardware, Software much. Note: I am using Windows Vista provided by HP during purchase. Let me know if I have to provide any further information about my laptop, i will give you all. thanks in advance for reading and solving my problem.

Here is a document that will help you in Testing the Battery in Windows Vista.
The steps in this article should help to determine if you need to replace your battery. This should be a good place to start.

My Pavilion dv4340us 6 cell went bad. Bought 12 cell fits great unit uses the battery but will not charge it. Battery co. sent second battery it does the same thing. I tried your method, still no charge. WHY????????

Well, at this point, it looks like it's not the battery, if you have been installing the correct battery for your laptop.
And by the way, when the original battery went bad, did it act like this one?
I have seen instances when the battery doesn't charge, yet the power supply does have enough power to run the computer, and it is the power supply that is at fault.
Perhaps, with what you've described, it could be the power supply. Maybe you can find a different, but exactly the same type, power supply to see if that's the issue.

tHE OLD BATTERY charges quickly, less than an hour, and runs out of power in about 15 minuets. It is a 6 cell 10.8 volts, low mah. The new batteries,2, are same volts but higher mah, 12 cell. The lap runs on the new batteries just fine, and runs fine on ac adapter with no battery in lap. No charge lite when lap is on or off. It runs windows XP \, all updated. Tomorrow I take it to the fixit shop.

Well, the fixit man is still scratchin his bald head. He thinks there is something to do with after market battery. He knows there is no HP replacement for old lap. He is keeping lap and trying to come up with fix or reason for the problem.
