Hello again Meaghanthorp.
Hard drives are one of the few parts of a computer which has moving parts. Inside the drive are magnetic platters which spin very rapidly as well as a needle. Similar to how a vinyl record player. Due to it being mechanical in nature eventually parts die. The platters stop spinning, the platters get scratched, or the needle stops moving. There is little you can do to affect this (other than dropping the notebook). I, personally, have had hard drives show up dead and some last over a decade. You just never know.
I hope this helps! 🙂

Hello snatka79. I understand you've gotten the "boot device not found" error.
This error normally means that the hard drive is damaged and will need to be replaced. You should run the hard drive diagnostic to confirm this. This document has the instructions.
You said that this notebook is still in warranty. In that case you should contact HP Support immediately to get the issue sorted out. If you're in the US/Canada the number is 1-800-474-6836. If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.
I hope this is helpful. Have a great day!

Hello nidal75. I understand you're getting the "boot device not found" error during the startup test.
What problems were you having that led you to perform the startup test?
This means that your hard drive is experiencing problems and will likely need to replace the hard drive. I suggest running the regular hard drive test to confirm the issue. This document has instructions.
If the hard drive also fails this test then it will need to be replaced. Take a look at your notebook's Maintenance and Service Guide for instructions on disassembling the notebook. It also contains parts information. The section for the hard drive begins on page fifty-five.
If you find this helpful or want to say thanks you can click the white star under my name to give me Kudos. I really appreciate it.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Have a great day!
