I am trying to upgrade a compaq nc6220 original 512mb mem cpu speed  1.9 GHz

Intel Prem, added new Hard drive 320gb and 2 (one) mb mem, shutt off Hibern

and still it only recognize One MB (1024). What am I doing wrong ??

Hi thanks for your response, yes I had one 512 and yes I just put it  and get same 1024 so

obviously the bottom is busted !!!

now the question is can the slot be replaced or the entire motherboard ?

Hi:

 

Did you have only 1 512 MB chip in the machine under the keyboard, or 2 x 256 MB? (one under the keyboard and one in the bottom memory compartment)

 

Specs state you can install 2 x 1 GB.

 

If you still have the 512 MB chip, install it in the slot on the bottom of the notebook. If you don't get 1.5 Gigs, I suspect the bottom memory slot is bad.

 

If you get 1.5 Gigs, then the 1 GB memory chip you are installing in the slot on the bottom of the notebook is bad.

Hi:

 

The entire motherboard would have to be replaced.

 

If that is your intention, get one off an nc6230 and you can run Windows 7.

 

They use the exact same components. The nc6230 has the ATI x300 discrete graphics adapter which is Windows 7 capable.

 

Or, just get a used but working nc6230 on eBay. They are less than $200.
