what are the advantages and disadvantages of dual booting?

Is Linux safe to use on my laptop(Window 10) ?

Thanks.

Every laptop I have owned since about 2001 has been dual booted Windows and Linux. Advantage is access to tons of free software which in many cases works better than Windows programs. Network analyzers, data recovery tools which can scour bad hard drives and recover seemingly deleted data, those are just a couple examples. Also I think Linux is more secure. I might be crazy but if I am in an airport or coffeeshop I use Linux. There have been some Linux viruses but fewer than even Mac viruses which are very rare.

It is completely "safe" in that it will do no damage to the hardware but it is very easy to screw up the file structure when trying to install Linux. Just be sure to have a good full system backup of Windows before you start messing with it.

I guess the disadvantage you lose some disk space in Windows to Linux and Linux has a learning curve. If you don't do anything complex with your computer I can't see having Linux.

Post back if you want any more help. My distro of choice is Kubuntu but I also use OpenSuse and Ubuntu sometimes.
