- Fixing Cooling Fan Not Operating Correctly on an HP Laptop
The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly. Continued operation is not recommended and may cause unpredictable behavior that can result in random shutdown, data loss, or possible system damage. The notebook may continue to boot after acknowledging the message, but the warning reappears during subsequent startups.
Symptoms
- Cooling fan error appears during startup.
- Fan may be noisy, intermittent, or appear not to be operating.
- The notebook may experience overheating or unexpected shutdowns.
- The warning continues to appear even after restarting the computer.
The issue can occur due to one or more of the following:
- Dust, lint, or pet hair blocking the cooling vents or fan.
- Air vents obstructed during normal use.
- Incorrect BIOS settings.
- Outdated BIOS firmware.
- Cooling fan hardware failure requiring service.
Troubleshooting steps
-
Clear the error and boot Windows
- Press Enter to clear the fan error and allow the system to start to the Windows desktop (if it will).
- Press Enter to clear the fan error and allow the system to start to the Windows desktop (if it will).
-
Power off and clean the vents
- Shut down the laptop and disconnect the power cord.
- Move objects away from the laptop.
- Locate the air vents (usually on the sides and bottom).
- Use canned air to blow dust out of the vents.
- Wait 5–10 minutes for the laptop to cool.
- Reconnect power and turn the laptop on.
- Listen to the fans:
- If they sound normal, place the laptop on a hard, flat surface (not bed/couch/lap) and continue using it.
- If a fan is very loud, growling, or not spinning, the fan likely has a hardware issue.
-
Perform a hard reset
- Do a hard/power reset to clear recorded thermal values in memory. This can let you use the PC briefly to back up important files before service.
