- HP 14 Laptop PC 14-d5000 – OBS Studio Does Not Capture Audio...
OBS Studio does not capture audio on an HP 14 Laptop PC 14-d5000 (4T802AV) running Windows 11, although the same OBS software captures audio correctly on another computer.
The issue may affect desktop/system audio, microphone audio, or both.
The issue can occur when OBS Studio is configured to use the wrong audio device, Windows is using an incorrect input/output device, microphone permissions are disabled, or audio enhancements interfere with audio capture.
Troubleshooting Steps
1: Identify the Audio Capture Type
Determine whether OBS is expected to capture:
- Desktop/system audio
- Microphone audio
- Both desktop audio and microphone audio
This helps identify whether the problem is related to the playback device, recording device, or OBS configuration.
2: Verify OBS Audio Sources
- Open OBS Studio.
- Select Settings.
- Select Audio.
- Under Global Audio Devices, check Desktop Audio.
- Select the correct speaker or audio output device.
- Check Mic/Auxiliary Audio.
- Select the correct built-in microphone or connected microphone.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Return to the OBS main window.
- Play audio or speak into the microphone and check whether the audio meters respond.
If OBS is configured to use the wrong playback or recording device, it may not receive an audio signal even though Windows audio is working normally.
3: Verify Windows Audio Devices
- Right-click the speaker icon on the Windows taskbar.
- Select Sound settings.
- Under Output, verify that the correct speakers or headphones are selected.
- Play audio to confirm that Windows can produce sound.
- Under Input, select the correct microphone.
- Use the input test to verify that Windows detects microphone activity.
OBS depends on Windows audio devices. If Windows has selected an incorrect or unavailable device, OBS may not receive the expected audio signal.
4: Check Microphone Privacy Permissions
If the problem involves microphone recording:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Microphone.
- Make sure Microphone access is enabled.
- Make sure applications are allowed to access the microphone.
- If available, verify that desktop applications are allowed to access the microphone.
- Restart OBS Studio and test the microphone again.
Windows can prevent applications from accessing the microphone when privacy permissions are disabled.
5: Disable Audio Enhancements
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the playback device being used.
- Open More sound settings if required.
- Open the properties for the playback device.
- Locate the Enhancements or audio enhancement settings.
- Disable audio enhancements.
- Apply the changes.
- Restart OBS Studio.
- Test audio capture again.
Audio enhancement processing can sometimes interfere with how applications receive or capture an audio stream.
6: Test Audio Outside OBS
Test the microphone and speakers using another Windows application, such as Voice Recorder or Microsoft Teams.
- If the microphone works in another application but not in OBS, focus on OBS audio-device configuration and permissions.
- If the microphone does not work in other applications either, troubleshoot the Windows audio device or driver before troubleshooting OBS further.
7: Restart OBS After Audio Changes
After changing Windows audio devices, permissions, or enhancement settings:
- Close OBS Studio completely.
- Reopen OBS Studio.
- Verify the audio devices under Settings > Audio.
- Start a short test recording.
- Play the recording and verify that the expected audio is present.
