Windows 11 minimum system requirements
- Processor: 1 GHz or faster with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or SoC.
- Memory: 4 GB RAM or greater.
- Storage: 64 GB or greater available storage.
- Graphics: DirectX 12 or later compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- Display: 720p high-definition display, 9 inches or larger, with 8 bits per color channel.
- TPM: Trusted Platform Module 2.0.
- Firmware: UEFI with Secure Boot capability.
- Internet connectivity is required for updates and certain Windows features.
- Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and Microsoft account to complete initial device setup.
Before upgrading the HP 255 G5 Notebook PC, verify that the specific hardware configuration meets the minimum Windows 11 requirements.
HP recommends installing Microsoft PC Health Check to determine whether the computer is eligible for Windows 11. If the computer does not meet the requirements, the Windows 11 upgrade might not be offered through Windows Update.
- Back up personal files, photos, videos, documents, applications, and other important data.
- Create system recovery media or save a recovery image to a USB flash drive if applicable.
- File History can be used to back up files before upgrading.
HP recommends backing up important data to help prevent data loss if a problem occurs during the upgrade
3. Update software, drivers, and BIOS
Before installing Windows 11:
- Install the latest HP software and drivers available for the computer.
- Install the latest available BIOS.
- Update antivirus software and antivirus definitions.
- Configure the antivirus application to update automatically.
4. Verify TPM settings if required
Depending on the model and configuration, TPM might need to be enabled.
HP provides these steps:
- Restart the computer.
- Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup Utility.
- Open the Security tab.
- Check the TPM Device option.
- Change TPM Device to Available, if applicable.
- Change TPM State to Enabled.
- Press F10 to exit.
- Select Yes to save the changes.
- If prompted, press F1 to confirm and restart the computer.
Note: Certain computer configurations might have TPM disabled and might not provide an option in BIOS to enable it. If TPM 2.0 cannot be enabled and the system does not meet the Windows 11 minimum requirements, do not proceed with the Windows 11 upgrade.
5. Connect the AC adapter
Because the HP 255 G5 is a notebook PC, connect the AC adapter before downloading and installing Windows 11.
6. Check for Windows 11 through Windows Update
If the notebook meets the Windows 11 requirements:
- In Windows 10, click Start.
- Type Windows Update.
- Select Windows Update Settings.
- Click Check for updates.
- If Feature update to Windows 11 is available, click Download and install.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
7. Complete Windows 11 installation
When Windows 11 Setup starts:
- Allow Setup to download the required additional files.
- Click Next when prompted.
- At Choose what to keep, select the appropriate option:
- Keep personal files and apps
- Keep only personal files
- Keep nothing
- At Ready to install, click Install.
- Allow the computer to restart as required.
Do not turn off the computer or interrupt the installation while Windows 11 is being installed.
8. Update the notebook after installation
After Windows 11 installation:
- Connect the computer to the internet.
- Install the latest Windows updates.
- Update Windows apps through Microsoft Store.
- Update available drivers, applications, and software.
9. Troubleshoot hardware after the upgrade
If a hardware component such as the keyboard, display, or touchpad stops working correctly or loses functionality after the Windows 11 upgrade:
- Search for and open Device Manager.
- Expand the affected device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Follow the displayed instructions.
- Restart the computer after completing the driver installation.
