- HP Notebook – Computer Does Not Turn On or Start
The HP notebook does not turn on, does not start, or shows no response when the power button is pressed. In some cases, the notebook may show power or charging lights but fail to start.
Symptoms:
- The notebook does not turn on when the power button is pressed.
- Laptop no turning on, No power or charging light appears.
- The notebook does not charge.
- The notebook turns on only when connected to the AC adapter.
- The power or battery LED blinks.
- The notebook turns on, but the screen remains black.
- The notebook shuts down unexpectedly or does not start after being completely discharged.
Causes:
- A loose, damaged, or incorrect AC adapter.
- A faulty wall outlet or power connection.
- A drained or defective battery.
- A temporary hardware or power-state issue.
- Damaged charging port or power cable.
- Connected USB or other external devices interfering with startup.
- Hardware or BIOS-related problems.
Troubleshooting steps
1: Check the AC Adapter and Power Connection
- Disconnect the AC adapter from the notebook.
- Connect the AC adapter directly to a working wall outlet.
- Make sure the power cord is securely connected to the AC adapter and notebook.
- Check whether the AC adapter has a power LED. If the LED does not light up, try another wall outlet.
- Inspect the AC adapter and cable for:
- Cuts or exposed wires.
- Frayed or damaged areas.
- Burn marks or discoloration.
- Melted or warped plastic.
- Loose connections.
- Check that the adapter connector fits securely into the notebook's power port.
If the AC adapter or cable is damaged, hot, burned, or has exposed wires, stop using it and replace it with the correct HP adapter.
2: Check the Power and Battery LEDs
Connect the AC adapter and check the notebook's power or charging LED.
Depending on the HP model:
- White/green: The battery may be charged or charging normally.
- Amber/orange: The battery may be charging.
- Blinking: May indicate a battery or power-related problem.
- No light: The notebook may not be receiving power.
LED behavior varies by HP notebook model. Refer to the product's user guide for model-specific LED information.
3: Perform a Hard Reset
A hard reset can clear temporary power-state problems.
- Disconnect the AC adapter.
- Remove the battery if it is removable.
- Disconnect all USB devices and other external devices.
- Press and hold the Power button for approximately 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the AC adapter.
- If the battery was removed, leave it disconnected initially.
- Press the Power button to turn on the notebook.
If the notebook starts, reconnect the battery and external devices as needed.
4: Charge the Battery
For a notebook with a removable battery:
- Remove the battery.
- Check the battery contacts for dirt, corrosion, or damage.
- Reinstall the battery securely.
- Connect the AC adapter.
- Allow the notebook to charge for 15 to 30 minutes.
- Disconnect the AC adapter.
- Press the Power button and check whether the notebook starts.
If the notebook does not turn on using the battery, the battery may require replacement.
For notebooks with a non-removable battery, disconnect the AC adapter, press and hold the Power button for approximately 15 seconds, reconnect the adapter, and allow the notebook to charge before trying to start it again.
5: Disconnect External Devices
Disconnect all unnecessary devices from the notebook, including:
- USB flash drives.
- External hard drives.
- USB hubs.
- Printers.
- Docking stations.
- External keyboards and mice.
- HDMI or other external display cables.
After disconnecting the devices, try turning on the notebook again. If it starts, reconnect the devices one at a time to identify the device causing the problem.
6: Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
If the notebook can turn on but has power or charging problems, use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
From Windows
- Search for and open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Select Device Check or Component Tests.
- Select Power.
- Run the AC Adapter Test.
- Run the Battery Test.
- Review the test results.
If a test fails, record the Failure ID or error information before contacting HP Support.
If Windows does not start
- Turn the notebook off.
- Press the Power button.
- Immediately press F2 repeatedly.
- When HP PC Hardware Diagnostics opens, run the appropriate hardware tests.
7: If the Notebook Turns On but the Screen Is Black
If power LEDs are on or the fan is running but there is no image:
- Increase the screen brightness using the appropriate keyboard controls.
- Listen for fan or startup activity.
- Disconnect external devices.
- Connect an external monitor if available.
- Check whether an image appears on the external monitor.
If the external monitor displays an image, the issue may be related to the notebook's display or display cable rather than the power system.
8: Check for Hardware or BIOS Issues
If the notebook still does not start after completing the basic troubleshooting:
- Note any blinking LED patterns.
- Listen for beep codes or unusual sounds.
- Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics if possible.
- Record any diagnostic failure codes.
- If supported by the notebook model, use the appropriate HP BIOS recovery procedure.
Do not open the notebook or replace internal components unless you are comfortable performing hardware service and the model's service documentation supports it.
