The fingerprint reader does not work after installing fingerprint driver for window11 64-bit on an HP Pavilion dv6-6c65sx notebook . Windows does not recognize the fingerprint sensor.
If your fingerprint reader is not working, there are several potential solutions depending on the setup, login, or other issue that you are experiencing.
First, locate your fingerprint reader to confirm that your computer includes a fingerprint reader.
Symptoms
The fingerprint reader may stop working following issues:
- Fingerprint sign-in does not work.
- Windows Hello Fingerprint is unavailable.
- The Set up option is missing under Windows Hello Fingerprint.
- The fingerprint reader is not detected in Device Manager.
- The fingerprint reader stopped working after a Windows update.
- The fingerprint reader is listed under Unknown devices.
- Windows cannot recognize or use the fingerprint reader.
Verify the Fingerprint Reader
Confirm that the HP notebook actually includes a fingerprint reader.
Depending on the computer model, the fingerprint reader can be located:
- On the side of the computer.
- On the keyboard.
- On the palm rest.
Not all HP notebook configurations include a fingerprint reader.
Troubleshooting Steps
Power reset a PC
Perform a power reset (or hard reset) of your computer to clear information from the computer memory without erasing personal data.

Turn off the computer.

Disconnect the AC adapter.

Remove any discs from the disc drive.

Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

If you are using a notebook PC, disconnect the AC adapter.

Press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

Reconnect the AC adapter if necessary, and then turn on the computer.
1: Fingerprint Reader Stopped Working After a Windows Update
If the fingerprint reader stopped working after installing a Windows update:
- Check Microsoft Windows release information for any known fingerprint or biometric issues with the installed Windows version.
- Restart the computer.
- Perform a power reset.
- If the issue continues, perform a system reset.
- After restarting Windows, search for and open Sign-in options.
- Under Windows Hello Fingerprint, check whether the Set up option is available.
- If the option is available, configure the fingerprint reader again.
2: Unable to Sign In Using Windows Hello Fingerprint
If the fingerprint reader is detected but fingerprint sign-in does not work:
- In Windows, search for and open Sign-in options.
- Under Windows Hello Fingerprint, select Set up.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to register the fingerprint.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open the Windows security screen.
- Verify that the fingerprint sign-in option is available.
- Try signing in using the fingerprint reader.
If the fingerprint sign-in option is still unavailable:
- Search for and open Check for updates.
- Install any available Windows updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Return to Sign-in options and configure Windows Hello Fingerprint again.
3: Unable to Set Up the Fingerprint Reader
If the fingerprint reader cannot be configured:
- Search for and open Sign-in options.
- Under Windows Hello Fingerprint, check whether Set up is available.
- If Set up is available, select it and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If Set up is not available, open Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices.
- Check whether the fingerprint reader is listed.
- If it is not listed under Biometric devices, expand Unknown devices and check whether the fingerprint reader appears there.
- If the fingerprint reader is not listed in either location, continue with the fingerprint detection troubleshooting steps below.
4: Fingerprint Reader Not Detected in Device Manager
If the fingerprint reader does not appear in Device Manager:
- Restart the computer.
- Perform a power reset.
- Update the computer BIOS using the appropriate HP BIOS update for the notebook model.
- Run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Fingerprint Reader Test.
- If the fingerprint reader passes the hardware test, perform a system reset.
- If the issue continues, perform an HP Cloud Recovery using the appropriate recovery tool for the HP notebook.
- After recovery, check Device Manager and Windows Hello Fingerprint again.
5: Check Device Manager
Device Manager can help determine whether Windows recognizes the fingerprint hardware.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices.
- Look for the fingerprint reader.
- If the reader is listed, check for any warning icon indicating a driver or device problem.
- If it is not listed, expand Unknown devices.
- If the fingerprint reader is still missing, continue with BIOS, diagnostics, and recovery troubleshooting.
6: Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to determine whether the problem is related to the fingerprint hardware.
- Save your work and close open applications.
- Restart the computer.
- Press Esc repeatedly when the HP logo appears.
- Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Select the available Fingerprint Reader test.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Record any failure ID generated by the diagnostic test.
If the diagnostic test reports a hardware failure, contact HP Support and provide the failure ID.
