An HP Notebook PC displays a 24-digit Failure ID code during HP Hardware Diagnostics. In many cases, the system may fail to boot, display operating system errors, become unstable, or report a failed Hard Disk Short DST Test.
  • A 24-digit Failure ID appears in HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  • The notebook fails the Hard Disk Short DST test.
  • "Operating System Not Found" errors.
  • Windows startup problems.
  • Blue screen recovery or diagnostic messages.
  • System instability following a drop, power interruption, or storage-related issue.

A Hard Disk Short DST test failure with a 24-digit Failure ID indicates that the hard disk drive has failed and requires replacement.

Possible contributing factors mentioned include:

  • Hard drive failure
  • Improper system shutdowns
  • Sudden power surges
  • File corruption
  • Driver or application conflicts
  • Virus or malware activity
  • Physical shock or accidental drops

Applicable Products

  • HP Notebook PCs
  • HP 15 Notebook PCs
  • HP 2000 Series Notebook PCs
  • HP Pavilion Notebook PCs
  • HP ENVY Notebook PCs
  • HP ProBook and EliteBook PCs

Troubleshooting steps

1: Perform a Hard Reset

Before replacing hardware, perform a hard reset.

  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter.
  • Remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the Power button for at least 30 seconds.
  • Connect only the AC adapter.
  • Turn on the notebook and check whether the issue persists.

2: Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  • Power off the notebook.
  • Turn it on and immediately tap Esc repeatedly.
  • Press F2 to open HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run:
    • Hard Drive Test
    • Storage Test
    • System Extensive Test
  • Record any Failure ID that appears.

If the Hard Disk Short DST test fails, proceed with the remaining troubleshooting steps.

3: Reseat the Hard Drive

A loose drive connection can occasionally cause storage-related errors.

  • Power off the notebook.
  • Disconnect power.
  • Remove the service cover (if applicable).
  • Carefully remove and reinstall the hard drive.
  • Reassemble the notebook.
  • Run HP Diagnostics again.

4: Back Up Important Data Immediately

If the notebook still starts:

  • Connect an external storage device.
  • Back up all personal files immediately.
  • Prioritize:
    • Documents
    • Photos
    • Videos
    • Email files
    • Work-related data

A failing hard drive may deteriorate further without warning.

5: Recover Data from the Failed Drive

If Windows no longer loads:

  • Remove the failed hard drive.
  • Connect it to another computer using:
    • SATA-to-USB adapter
    • External hard drive enclosure
  • Attempt to copy critical files before replacing the drive.

6: Replace the Failed Hard Drive

If diagnostics confirm a Short DST failure:

  • Replace the hard drive with a compatible SATA HDD or SSD.
  • Use a drive with at least the same capacity as the original drive if recovery media will be used.
  • Install the replacement drive.
  • Reinstall the operating system or use HP Recovery Media.

7: Reinstall Windows Using HP Recovery Media

After replacing the drive:

  • Insert HP Recovery Media.
  • Start the notebook.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Complete Windows installation.
  • Install HP drivers and updates.
  • Restore backed-up files.

HP Recommendations

  • Record the complete 24-digit Failure ID before contacting HP Support.
  • Do not continue using the notebook extensively if a hard drive failure is confirmed.
  • Back up data as soon as possible.
  • Consider upgrading to an SSD when replacing a failed hard drive for improved performance and reliability.
