After performing a clean installation of Windows on an HP notebook, an Unknown Device may appear in Device Manager under Other devices. The device may be identified by the following hardware ID: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C3A&SUBSYS_1966103C&REV_04

For example, this issue was reported on an HP ENVY dv17 (j073ca) after installing Windows 8.1 64-bit following a hard drive replacement.

Cause

The hardware ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C3A corresponds to the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI). The unknown device appears when the appropriate Intel MEI driver is missing after Windows installation.

Troubleshooting Steps

1: Identify the hardware ID

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Other devices.
  • Right-click the Unknown device and select Properties.
  • Select the Details tab.
  • From the Property drop-down menu, select Hardware Ids.
  • Verify whether the hardware ID begins with:  pci\ven_8086&dev_a71d

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C3A

2: Install the Intel Management Engine Interface driver

  • Download the appropriate Intel Management Engine Interface driver for the specific HP notebook model.
  • Use the HP Software and Drivers page to locate the driver for the exact product model and operating system.
  • Install the Intel Management Engine Interface driver.
  • Restart the computer.

3: Verify the installation

  • Open Device Manager again.
  • Expand System devices.
  • Verify that Intel Management Engine Interface is listed without a yellow warning icon.
  • If the unknown device no longer appears under Other devices, the driver installation was successful.

The exact driver package can vary depending on the HP notebook model and operating system. Always use the driver listed for the specific HP product whenever available rather than installing an unrelated driver. HP's Software and Drivers page can be used to locate model-specific drivers.
