The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics System Check reports “SMART Check: Failed” on an HP Pavilion 14 Notebook PC running Windows 10 (64-bit).
A SMART Check: Failed message indicates that the hard drive has detected a potential hardware issue and may be approaching failure. HP recommends backing up important data immediately and running additional HP hardware diagnostics to confirm the drive status.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Back Up Important Data Immediately

  • Save all important files to an external drive or cloud storage.
  • Do not continue using the system unnecessarily until diagnostics are completed.

2. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Extensive Test

  • Turn off the notebook.
  • Press the Power button and immediately tap Esc repeatedly.
  • Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Select Component Tests.
  • Select Hard Drive.
  • Run the Extensive Test.
  • Record any Failure ID or Validation Code displayed.

3. Run the Hard Drive SMART Test Again

  • In HP Diagnostics, select Hard Drive Tests.
  • Run the SMART Check.
  • Verify whether the test passes or fails consistently.

4. Check the Hard Drive Connections (If Applicable)

  • Power off the notebook.
  • Disconnect AC power.
  • If the model allows service access, reseat the hard drive connection.
  • Restart the notebook and rerun HP Diagnostics.

5. Update BIOS

  • Visit HP Support.
  • Download the latest BIOS available for the HP Pavilion 14 Notebook PC.
  • Install the BIOS update while connected to AC power.
  • Restart the notebook.

6. Run Additional HP Diagnostics

  • Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run:
    • System Tests
    • Component Tests
  • Review any additional failures reported.

If SMART Check Continues to Fail

If SMART Check: Failed is reported repeatedly, HP recommends replacing the hard drive. If a Failure ID is generated, use that code when contacting HP Support
