The HP ZBook Fury 15 G7 Mobile Workstation (9VS25AV) fails to install a BIOS/System Firmware update.

The BIOS update may fail through HP Support Assistant, Windows-based BIOS update utilities, or when attempting to update the BIOS directly from the startup BIOS menu.

The reported system displayed:

  • HP BIOS and System Firmware (S92) – Failure Code: 259
  • “An error occurred when flashing the firmware.”

Symptoms

  • BIOS update fails through HP Support Assistant.
  • BIOS/System Firmware update reports Failure Code 259.
  • BIOS update fails when launched directly from the computer.
  • The update may stop shortly after the firmware-copy process begins.

A BIOS update can fail when the firmware cannot be successfully written to the system BIOS.

Possible contributing conditions include:

  • Corrupted or incomplete BIOS firmware.
  • A failed previous BIOS update.
  • BIOS update environment problems.
  • Firmware flashing failure.
  • Incorrect BIOS package for the exact system.
  • Security or encryption configuration interfering with the update process.
  • BIOS corruption requiring recovery rather than another normal Windows-based update.

HP notes that BIOS corruption can occur as a result of a failed BIOS upgrade, and that HP computers can use BIOS recovery procedures to restore a working BIOS.

Troubleshooting steps

1: Confirm the Exact HP Model and Product Number

Before downloading a BIOS file, verify the exact computer model and product number.

For the system in the referenced case:

HP ZBook Fury 15 G7 Mobile Workstation – 9VS25AV

Do not use a BIOS package intended for another ZBook model or generation.

HP specifically warns that installing an incorrect BIOS can prevent the computer from operating correctly.

2: Check Whether HP Sure Start Is Present

Before attempting manual BIOS recovery, determine whether the computer supports HP Sure Start.

HP Sure Start automatically repairs certain BIOS and firmware corruption using a protected backup copy. HP states that computers with Sure Start do not support the manual BIOS recovery methods described for systems without Sure Start, including manual key-combination and USB recovery methods.

If the system has HP Sure Start:

  • Restart the computer.
  • Watch the HP startup screen.
  • Check whether HP Sure Start is identified.
  • If Sure Start is present, allow the automatic recovery process to complete if it starts.
  • If recovery does not resolve the issue, contact HP Support or the organization's IT support.

3: Create a BIOS Recovery USB Drive

If the system does not use HP Sure Start and Windows-based BIOS updates continue to fail, create a BIOS recovery USB drive using another working computer.

Requirements

  • A second working computer with Internet access.
  • A USB flash drive.
  • The correct BIOS package for the HP ZBook Fury 15 G7.
  • AC power available for the affected ZBook.

Procedure

  • On another working computer, go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
  • Search for the exact HP ZBook Fury 15 G7.
  • Select the correct product.
  • Open the BIOS category.
  • Select the appropriate BIOS update.
  • Verify that the BIOS package applies to the exact computer.
  • Download and run the HP BIOS update utility.
  • Follow the installation wizard.
  • When the HP BIOS Update and Recovery screen appears, select the option to Create Recovery USB flash drive.
  • Insert a suitable USB flash drive.
  • Select the USB drive.
  • Continue through the prompts.
  • Wait while the BIOS recovery files are copied to the USB drive.
  • When the recovery drive is successfully created, close the utility and safely remove the USB drive.

For business systems, BIOS settings or firmware management may also be controlled by an IT department.

4: Perform BIOS Recovery

After creating the recovery USB:

  • Turn off the affected ZBook.
  • Connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  • Insert the BIOS recovery USB drive.
  • Press and hold Windows + B.
  • While continuing to hold the keys, press and hold the Power button for approximately 2–3 seconds.
  • Release the Power button.
  • Continue holding Windows + B.
  • Wait for the HP BIOS Update/Recovery screen to appear.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Allow the BIOS recovery process to complete without interruption.
  • The computer may restart automatically during the recovery process.

HP documents the Windows + B recovery procedure for supported HP notebooks without Sure Start. Some systems may instead require Windows + V.

5: If Windows + B Does Not Start BIOS Recovery

If the BIOS recovery screen does not appear:

  • Turn off the computer.
  • Ensure the AC adapter is connected.
  • Insert the BIOS recovery USB drive.
  • Press and hold Windows + B.
  • Press the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release the Power button while continuing to hold Windows + B.
  • Wait for the recovery screen.

If this does not work, repeat the procedure using Windows + V, as some HP models use that key combination.

6: Allow the Recovery Process to Complete

BIOS recovery can take longer than a normal startup.

During recovery:

  • The screen may remain blank temporarily.
  • The computer may restart.
  • Keyboard LEDs may blink.
  • The fan may run.
  • The system may appear inactive for a period of time.

Do not interrupt the process unless instructed by HP.

HP explains that BIOS recovery involve automatic restarts and temporary blank-screen conditions while the firmware is restored.

7: Verify the BIOS Version

After Windows starts:

  • Press Windows + R.
  • Type msinfo32.
  • Press Enter.
  • Locate BIOS Version/Date.
  • Compare the installed BIOS version with the version intended for the ZBook.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Enter BIOS Setup using F10, if necessary.
  • Verify that the computer starts normally.

If the system boots normally and the BIOS version is correct, the recovery was successful.

8: Resume Normal Windows Updates

After successful BIOS recovery:

  • Start Windows normally.
  • Open HP Support Assistant if it is installed.
  • Check for available updates.
  • Install only BIOS updates intended for the exact ZBook model.
  • Restart the computer when prompted.
  • Confirm that the BIOS update completes successfully.

HP recommends using HP Support Assistant to check for available BIOS updates and installing the latest BIOS designed specifically for the computer.
