HP notebooks equipped with the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adapter may experience wireless connectivity issues after upgrading to Windows 10. The wireless adapter may connect successfully in 802.11g mode, but enabling 802.11n mode can result in system instability, including Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors. This issue was reported on an HP Pavilion dv9500 notebook running Windows 10 (64-bit).
  • BSOD occurs when connecting using 802.11n wireless mode.
  • Wireless connection works only in 802.11g mode.
  • Unstable network connectivity after upgrading to Windows 10.
  • Frequent disconnects or wireless adapter failures.
  • User wants to replace the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adapter with a newer model.

Cause

The Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN is an older wireless adapter and may have compatibility limitations with Windows 10, particularly when operating in 802.11n mode. Additionally, certain HP notebook models such as the Pavilion dv9500 use a BIOS whitelist, which restricts the use of unsupported internal wireless cards.

Troubleshooting Steps

1: Verify Wireless Connectivity Mode

  • Connect the notebook to the wireless network.
  • Observe whether the connection remains stable in 802.11g mode.
  • If BSOD occurs only when 802.11n is enabled, continue with the following steps.

2: Configure the Wireless Adapter to Use B/G Mode Only

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Network adapters.
  • Right-click Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN.
  • Select Properties.
  • Open the Advanced tab.
  • Locate the Wireless Mode setting.
  • Change the setting to 802.11b/g or B/G Only.
  • Click Apply and OK.
  • Restart the notebook.

3: Remove Existing Wireless Connections

  • Open Settings.
  • Select Network & Internet.
  • Click Wi‑Fi.
  • Select Manage Known Networks.
  • Remove previously saved wireless profiles.
  • Reconnect to the wireless network.

4: Update Network Adapter Driver

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Network Adapters.
  • Right-click the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adapter.
  • Select Update Driver.
  • Search automatically for available drivers.
  • Install any available updates and restart the notebook.

5: Test Network Stability

  • Connect to the wireless network.
  • Browse websites and stream content.
  • Monitor the system for:
    • BSOD errors
    • Unexpected disconnects
    • Network performance issues
