On different occassions screen goes black for a few seconds and this can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to try and resolve the issue on both HP laptops and desktops.

  1. Check Connections:

    • Ensure all cables and connectors are securely attached to your monitor and computer.
    • If using a desktop, check the connection between the monitor and the graphics card.

  2. Update Drivers:

    • For Graphics Card Drivers:
      • Go to HP's official website to find and update your graphics drivers.
      • For NVIDIA or AMD cards, you can also visit their respective websites to download the latest drivers.
    • Use Device Manager to update the display adapter drivers manually.

  3. Check for Overheating:

    • Ensure that the vents on the laptop or desktop are not obstructed.
    • Clean the vents with compressed air to prevent dust accumulation.

Additional Steps for Laptops:

  1. Battery and Power Cycle:

    • Disconnect external devices, unplug the power supply, and remove the battery (if removable).
    • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to reset the hardware.
    • Reconnect the battery and power supply and power on the laptop.

  2. Test with External Monitor:

    • Connect the laptop to an external display. If the issue doesn’t occur on the external monitor, the laptop’s display might be faulty.

Additional Steps for Desktops:

  1. Reseat Components:

    • Turn off the computer and unplug it.
    • Reseat the RAM modules and the graphics card to ensure they are not loose.

  2. Monitor Settings:

    • Check the monitor settings to ensure it’s set to the correct input source and adjust the display settings if necessary.

  3. BIOS Update:

    • Check for a BIOS update on the HP support website, as an outdated BIOS could cause hardware compatibility issues.

If the problem persists after following these troubleshooting steps, it may indicate a hardware issue that needs professional servicing.
