Windows Update repeatedly fails to install Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Extension - 6.0.9652.1 with error 0x80070103.

Error 0x80070103 typically occurs when Windows Update attempts to install a driver that is already installed, older than the current version, or not applicable to the system. In most cases, this is a non-critical Windows Update driver issue and does not indicate a hardware failure.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Verify Audio Functionality

  • Test speakers, headphones, and microphone.
  • Confirm audio devices are working properly in Settings > System > Sound.

2. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

  • Navigate to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  • Restart the PC and recheck for updates.

3. Check the Installed Realtek Driver Version

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Open Realtek Audio > Driver tab.
  • Verify the installed driver version and date.

4. Install the Latest HP Audio Driver

  • Download and install the latest Realtek audio driver from the HP support page for the HP Elite SFF 600 G9.
  • Restart the computer after installation.

5. Reinstall the Realtek Audio Driver

  • Uninstall the Realtek Audio device from Device Manager.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Install the latest HP audio driver package.

6. Reset Windows Update Components

  • Clear the Windows Update cache by resetting the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders.
  • Restart the update services and check for updates again.

7. Hide the Driver Update

If audio is functioning normally and the update continues to fail:

  • Use Microsoft's Show or Hide Updates tool.
  • Hide Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Extension - 6.0.9652.1 to prevent further installation attempts.

8. Check Optional Updates

  • Navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Optional Updates.
  • Install any newer Realtek driver versions that may be available.

9. Update BIOS

  • Install the latest BIOS version available for the HP Elite SFF 600 G9.
  • Restart the system once the update is complete.

10. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Press Esc at startup, then F2.
  • Run the Audio Test and other relevant component tests.
