- Troubleshooting Jumpy Cursor on an HP Laptop While Charging
A jumpy or erratic cursor while charging can be related to power/grounding behavior, the charger, connected accessories, docking devices, or firmware/BIOS behavior.
Generic troubleshooting steps
-
Test with and without the charger
- Unplug the charger and check whether the cursor becomes normal.
- If the issue happens only while charging, the charging setup is likely involved.
-
Check the charger and power source
- Use the original HP charger designed for your notebook.
- Try a different wall outlet.
- Avoid overloaded power strips or adapters if possible.
-
Disconnect external accessories
- Unplug any USB devices, docks, external keyboard/mouse, and monitor connections.
- Then test again while charging.
- HP notes BIOS fixes for issues where the keyboard or mouse becomes jumpy and delayed in the BIOS menu when connecting the D6000 dock and where a monitor may fail after resume with the HP USB-C Dock G5.
-
If you use a dock, test without it
- Connect the charger directly to the laptop.
- If using an HP dock or D6000 dock, disconnect it and retest.
-
Update BIOS and drivers
- HP states that updated BIOS versions were released for several 2021 HP notebook platforms to address jumpy/delayed keyboard or mouse behavior and other stability issues.
- Download updates from HP Software and Driver Downloads after checking your exact model.
-
Check HP Accessory Center settings if using HP accessories
- If your issue involves an external HP mouse/keyboard, make sure HP Accessory Center is installed and updated.
- HP also recommends ensuring the accessory is shown as Connected, not just paired.
-
Test with another pointing device
- Try the built-in touchpad only.
- Then test with an external USB/Bluetooth mouse separately to isolate whether the problem is with the touchpad, mouse, or charging environment.
-
Restart and test in BIOS
- A restart can clear temporary input issues.
- If the cursor/input is jumpy even in BIOS, that points more toward firmware, power, or hardware interaction.
Possible reasons
- Charger or grounding/power noise issue
- Dock-related input delay/jitter
- Outdated BIOS/firmware
- Accessory software/connection issue
- External device interference
