DiscriptionIf the numeric keys on your HP laptop's keypad are not functioning as expected and touching the keypad results in uncontrollable scrolling,

Here are some potential solutions to address the issue:

Step 1: Verify Num Lock Key

  • Make sure that the Num Lock key is activated. Press the Num Lock  key on the keyboard to toggle the numeric keypad functionality on or off.
  • Check if a light indicator is present and active, indicating that Num Lock is enabled.

Step 2: Check Keyboard Settings

  • From your Start screen, type control and select Control Panel from the search results.
  • Navigate to Hardware and Sound, then Devices and Printers, and select Mouse.
  • Review the Mouse Properties, specifically pointer options or scrolling features that might be acting when you touch the keypad.

Step 3: Identify and Adjust TouchPad Gestures

  • Gesture features can sometimes interfere with normal keypad use. To adjust or disable them, access your Mouse settings as follows:
    • From the Start screen, type Mouse, select Settings, and then choose Mouse.
    • Click the Device Settings tab and select your TouchPad device.
    • Click Settings and review the gestures section to disable or adjust touch functionalities that might be causing unintentional scrolling.

Step 4: Ensure Function Keys Toggle Correctly

  • Press the fn key in combination with f3 to ensure that Sleep or other features aren't being inadvertently activated.
  • Sometimes, function key combinations can toggle certain features on the laptop that interfere with typical keyboard functionalities.

Step 5: External Devices

  • Disconnect any external keyboards or numeric keypads to ensure they are not conflicting with the built-in numeric keypad.

Step 6: Restart and Update Drivers

  • Restart your computer.
  • Ensure that your device drivers, especially the keyboard and TouchPad drivers, are up-to-date. You can do this via Device Manager:
    • Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
    • Expand the Keyboards and Mice and other pointing devices categories.
    • Right-click on the devices listed and select Update driver.

Tips for Future Reference

  • Regularly check for software updates via the HP Support Assistant to keep your drivers up to date.
  • Reboot the Device: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches in device operation.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, it could be indicative of a hardware issue.
