When you receive an 'Enter WPS PIN' message during the setup of an HP printer on a Windows system, it usually indicates that the printer is trying to connect to your wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).

Here’s how you can troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

What is the WPS PIN?

The WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) PIN is a unique 8-digit code used by some HP printers to connect securely to wireless networks. You have a limited time (usually 90 seconds) to enter this PIN.

Steps to Find the WPS PIN

  1. Check the Printer Display:

    • Look for the WPS PIN displayed on the control panel of your printer. Some printers will print a page or display the PIN directly on the screen.

  2. Refer to Printed Information:

    • During the setup, if a PIN page is printed, check that page for the WPS PIN.

  3. Access the Printer Information Sheet:

    • If your printer offers an information sheet or report function through the setup menu, you may find the PIN on this sheet.

  4. Use HP's Software or Apps:

    • If the PIN is not visible, try using HP's dedicated software or mobile apps which might help reveal networking settings including the WPS PIN.

  5. Restart the Setup Process:

    • If the PIN is rejected or you cannot find it, restart the setup process. This can often resolve minor glitches.

  6. Alternative Connection Methods:

    • If WPS PIN method is not preferable, consider switching to other connection methods such as USB, Ethernet, or using a traditional Wi-Fi setup through the HP software wherein you enter the SSID and password manually.

Reasons for the 'Enter WPS PIN' Message

  • Security: The WPS PIN is a part of the security protocol to ensure devices connect safely to the network.
  • Automatic Connection: Some HP printers default to WPS for wireless setup, triggering the PIN request.
  • Connection Integrity: Ensures that only authorized users connect the printer to the network.

Tips

  • Ensure your router supports WPS; some older models may not have this capability.
  • Keep your router and printer within close proximity to strengthen the signal during the setup process.
  • If other network issues persist, restart your router and printer and try connecting again.
