Troubleshooting "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" Error

When encountering the "usb\device_descriptor_failure" error on an HP Pavilion G6, it typically relates to issues with how the USB device is being recognized by Windows.

Here are detailed troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:

Reason for the Error

This error may arise due to several factors such as:

  • Faulty or incompatible USB peripherals
  • Issues with the USB port or the driver
  • Conflicts with the system or hardware
  • Connection with long USB cables
  • Power surges or insufficient power to the device

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check the USB Device

    • Disconnect the USB device and reconnect it to a different port.

    • Try the device on another computer to verify that the device itself is working.

  2. Use a Shorter USB Cable

    • If you are using a long USB cable (especially over 2 meters), try a shorter cable to avoid signal degradation.

  3. Restart Your Computer

    • Sometimes, a simple restart can reset hardware conflicts or temporary glitches.

  4. Uninstall USB Device Drivers

    • Go to Device Manager by right-clicking the Start Button and selecting it from the list.

    • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

    • Find the "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" entry, right-click it, and select Uninstall Device.

    • After uninstalling, restart your computer. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.

  5. Update USB Drivers

    • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your specific model.

    • Alternatively, in Device Manager, right-click the USB Device and choose to update the driver software, either automatically or manually.

  6. Check for Windows Updates

    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

    • Ensure your system is up-to-date with the latest Windows updates.

  7. Check the Power Management Settings

    • In Device Manager, right-click on each Root Hub device under Universal Serial Bus controllers and go to Properties.

    • Click on the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

  8. Verify if the Device is Faulty

    • If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, it may be that the peripheral device itself is malfunctioning and needs to be checked or replaced.
