How to use Miracast or Miracast Over Infrastructure with HP Poly Devices
Miracast allows presenters to wirelessly share their Windows screen using native OS functionality—no additional apps are required.
HP Poly collaboration devices such as Poly Studio X, Poly Studio G62, and Poly G7500 support Miracast, enabling seamless wireless presentation either over the local network (Infrastructure mode) or direct peer‑to‑peer (P2P).
Using Miracast over Infrastructure, the streaming session runs fully over the enterprise LAN, while initial device discovery still uses a short‑range WiFi peer‑to‑peer mechanism to discover the devices. No dedicated access points are required to use this with Poly device.
Enabling Miracast on HP Poly Devices
Requirements
To use Miracast with Poly Studio X, Studio G62, or Poly G7500, ensure the following prerequisites are met:
- The Poly device is running supported PolyOS firmware.
- The device is logged in and operating in Native Poly Provider mode.
NOTE: Using any other Provider like Zoom Rooms, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet please work with their Support team how to enable this - Miracast is enabled in the device system settings.
- The Poly device is connected to a secured Wi‑Fi network or wired Ethernet.
- The presenting PC is running Windows 10 version 1703 or later, or Windows 11.
- For discovery, the presenter must be physically close to the Poly‑equipped display, even when Miracast over Infrastructure is used.
- The network allows the following ports:
- TCP 7236 and 7250 (bi‑directional) for Miracast streaming
- UDP 5353 for mDNS‑based discovery
- If the Poly device and PC are on different VLANs or subnets, mDNS must be configured across VLANs to enable discovery.
MIRACAST Port Type Direction Service 5353 UDP Both mDNS Discovery 7236 TCP Both RTSP Control Port 7250 TCP Both Connection to Miracast Sink 32768-65536 UDP Both Ephemeral Ports for Return Traffic
Note: During discovery, the Poly device advertises its IP address via Ethernet / WiFi beacon frames.
Considerations and Best Practices
- Miracast over Infrastructure is a Microsoft extension and is supported only on modern Windows versions. Android devices and older Windows systems are not supported in this mode.
- Organizations with mixed device types may choose to:
- Use Miracast P2P for maximum compatibility, or
- Combine Miracast over Infrastructure (Windows) with other wireless sharing approaches for mobile devices.
- If both P2P and Infrastructure connections are available, Windows automatically selects the connection type. This selection is controlled by the OS and cannot be overridden by the Poly device. In most environments, Windows prefers P2P.
- Windows Miracast supports multiple streaming profiles, which can affect latency, quality, and performance depending on device and network conditions.
Steps to Enable Miracast on Poly Studio X, G62, or G7500
- Log in to the Poly device in Native Poly Provider mode.
- Navigate to Settings → Security → Wireless Security → Wireless
- Enable Wireless Connectivity.
- Go to Screen Mirroring → Enable Miracast
- Enable Miracast Over Infrastructure (Optional)
If Miracast streaming over the LAN is required, enable Miracast Over Infrastructure in the Screen Mirroring settings. - (Optional) Select an Operational Channel that complies with local regulatory requirements.
NOTE: Important Regional Setting
To ensure proper wireless behavior, verify that the correct country is set:Settings → General → My Information → Location → Country
This ensures channel availability and regulatory compliance.
Presenting from a Windows Device
To share your screen from a Windows PC or laptop:
- Ensure the Poly device is in the same room and powered on.
- On the PC keyboard, press Win + P.
- Select Connect to a wireless display, or press Win + K.
- Choose the name of the Poly Studio X / G62 / G7500–connected display from the list.
- If prompted, enter the TV UI on‑screen PIN code.
- Your screen will now be mirrored to the Poly device.
Presenting from an Android Device
Miracast compatibility and steps may vary by Android manufacturer. Common options include:
- Smart View
- Screen Mirroring
- Quick Connect
- Cast (device‑dependent)
Windows Firewall:
It's important to check if the Firewall is blocking the traffic.
Please allow the following services “%systemroot%\system32\WUDFHost.exe and %systemroot%\system32\CastSrv.exe” to communicate (inbound/outbound) through the Windows firewall.
Wireshark Network Traffic:
Wireshark Capture Filter
rtp || rtsp || mdns
The Protocol is Multicast Domain Name Server (mDNS) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicast_DNS
mdns contains "_display" _display._tcp. (Required for Miracast over infrastructure. Only appears when Screen Share is open on the PC.)
Starting Miracast from PC
- OPTIONS * RTSP/1.0\r\n
Ending Miracast from PC
- SET_PARAMETER rtsp://localhost/wfd1.0 RTSP/1.0\r\n
- wfd_trigger_method: TEARDOWN\r\n
