HP ENVY 6034e All-in-One Printer

Bought an envy 6034e, set it up on the desk, plugged it in, installed the supplied ink, downloaded the app. Machine refused to print, said i needed to subscribe to ink refills to be able to use it (scam) so i subscribed, after subscribing i got the message that the ink catridges will not work as they are not instant ink cartridges, but they came with the machine and i was prompted to subscribe before i could print. I have un-subscribed, purchased new cartridges, installed and you guessed it, now has a fault reading "cartridge or account issue" and will not allow me to print. Clearly these printers are nothing more than a scam, so far i am out of pocket the price of the machine (that came with ink that cannot be used) and also out of pocket the price of the extra cartridges i had to buy. Have searched high and low on these help forums for a solution and all i can see thus far is that many people have been scammed by HP and their instant ink program that seems to render the customer hopelessly out of pocket and unable to print. id love a solution, one that renders the printer usable without a subscription of any kind. Time to go back to a Brother, flawless 15 year run from my last one, dirt and water finally took its toll

It sounds like a frustrating experience, but there are a few potential solutions you can try to get your HP Envy 6034e printing without an Instant Ink subscription:

 

1. Confirm You're Using the Correct Ink Cartridges

  • HP Envy 6034e uses HP 305 or HP 305XL cartridges (depending on region).
  • If you previously activated Instant Ink, your Instant Ink cartridges won’t work anymore after unsubscribing.
  • You must use genuine HP standard (non-Instant Ink) cartridges.

Try the following:
Check if the cartridges are labeled "Instant Ink" – these will not work anymore if you're unsubscribed.
If you have standard HP 305 cartridges, try reseating them (remove, clean the contacts, and reinstall).

 

2. Reset the Printer

Resetting can remove account-related issues:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
  2. Remove the ink cartridges.
  3. Wait 5-10 minutes.
  4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on without the cartridges installed.
  5. When prompted, insert the new standard (non-Instant Ink) cartridges.

 

3. Remove HP Smart & Reset Printer Setup

Sometimes, the HP Smart App causes issues. Try reinstalling it:

  1. Uninstall HP Smart from your device.
  2. Reset the printer to factory settings:
    • On the printer, press and hold the Wi-Fi & Cancel buttons for about 10 seconds until the power light flashes.
  3. Reinstall HP Smart and set up the printer again.

⚠️ Important:

  • When setting up, do NOT enable Instant Ink or sign in to an HP account if you want to use it without a subscription.
  • Skip any prompts about Instant Ink.

 

4. Check for Firmware Downgrade (If Needed)

Some firmware updates lock out third-party or older cartridges.

  • Try rolling back to an older firmware version from HP’s website.
  • If that’s not an option, disable automatic firmware updates to prevent future restrictions.
