Product: Laser Jet Pro M454dm
Operating System: macOS 10.15 Catalina

I am using a custom sized paper and the printer will not print duplex. I have tried feeding the paper from both trays, but in neither case will it work. Is this a built-in limitation?

You do not state the size or the weight. If you do not specify in the driver or on the printer, the size and the weight, it will not duplex because the default is to avoid possible damage to the printer or your media and if it does not know anything about the paper it will not try to perform a duplex job.

And generally, the answer to your question is Yes, this is a built-in limitation.

 

Automatic Duplex Printing is supported on select paper sizes only, not on any paper size, any supported size is listed as 'Duplexer' under Compatible trays/components below:
