Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP 7720 and have had cartridges in stock for some time (up to two years) Due to COVID I have not been required to print as much as I had in 2019. I am now getting error messages to say that the cartridge is older generation and will not work on this printer.

There does not appear to a way of disabling the cartridge protection feature. I have tried the settings using HP Smart, but that doe not the option to disable the protection.

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,

I’d recommend you contact HP Phone Support in your region for replacement ink cartridge options.

Follow the instructions below to reach them:

  • 1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
  • 2) Select your product type below.
  • 3) Enter the serial of your device.
  • 4) Select the country from the drop-down.
  • 5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.
  • 6)Fill the web-form and proceed further.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? Please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

Have a great day!

Sorry, your answer does not help me.

The printer is a replacement sent just before the warranty on my original one ran out of warranty. All I want to do is get the printer to accept the ink cartridges that I have which include the "OLDER GENERATION CHIP". Ideally I could reset the software to an earlier date and get it not to update.

My concern is that have around €400 tied up in ink that I cannot use because you have changed the software/chip. These changes were not notified, nor was I given the option to reject an update at any time.

Not only is this a hit to my pocket It is definitely not environmentally friendly. Also to me this stinks of profiteering and may even be anti-trust in some parts of the world.

I understand you are not able to use the ink cartridges due to this error. To assist you better,

If this is a genuine HP ink cartridge, I would need some information related to the ink cartridges and the printer which cannot be shared on a public post for security reasons.

I have sent you a private message, reply to the message with the required details.
