HP laserjet 8600 error message "cartridge appears to be damaged but is new and genuine".  Black only.  Turned printer on and off; checked connections and installed all new cartridges.  Removed back and replaced.  Still getting error message.

Hi @gia18,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already taken some of the initial troubleshooting steps for this issue, which is great. Here are a few more steps you can try.

  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, the contacts on the cartridge or within the printer can get dirty, leading to communication errors. Gently wipe the contacts on the cartridge with a clean, lint-free cloth, and also clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge makes contact.
  • Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and leave it unplugged for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset any internal error messages.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model on the HP website. Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve various issues, including cartridge errors.
  • Inspect for Physical Damage: Carefully examine the cartridge and the printer for any signs of physical damage. If you find any damage, it's possible that it's causing the error message.
  • Test with Another Cartridge: If possible, try using a different black cartridge to see if the error persists. This can help determine if the issue is with the cartridge itself or with the printer.

By systematically going through these steps, you should hopefully be able to resolve the cartridge error message on your HP LaserJet 8600 printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
