There are no ink cartriages in the printer.  Inks had depleted so I removed them all.

Hi @alahoku,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e printer’s carriage won’t move, especially after removing all ink cartridges, it’s likely the printer is stuck in a protective or error state. Let’s walk through the steps to fix this.

Fix: Carriage Cannot Move – HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e

Step 1: Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug it back in and turn the printer on.

This clears temporary memory and may reset the carriage mechanism.

Step 2: Check for Obstructions

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Look inside for any paper scraps, packing material, or debris.
  3. Gently try to slide the carriage left and right.
    • Do not force it if it’s stuck this can damage the printer.

Step 3: Reinsert Ink Cartridges

Even if the cartridges are empty, the printer may refuse to move the carriage without them:

  • Reinsert the old cartridges if available.
  • If not, insert new HP Instant Ink or standard cartridges.

The printer needs cartridges installed to complete initialization and allow carriage movement.

Step 4: Check for E3 or Carriage Jam Error

If you see an E3 error or “Carriage Jam” message:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
