Operating System: macOS 10.13 High Sierra

My black ink cartridge is empty. I still have color. Do both cartridges have to be in place for either to work? Can I use two black cartridges? Can I use just 1?

Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? 

 

Most HP Inkjet printers with two cartridges produced in the last few years will work in single cartridge mode automatically if the color (or black) cartridge is removed.  

 

Inkjet printers with four or five ink cartridges require all the cartridges to be installed.
