My printer keeps showing cartridges can only be used in a printer that is currently enrolled in HP Ink. I am enrolled and I pay monthly subscription. I can't use the control panel as the HP message is on their. Any ideas?

Hi @Bonzobev,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for sharing the details. The error message "Cartridges can only be used in a printer that is currently enrolled in HP Ink" — even though you're already enrolled and paying — typically points to a communication or account sync issue between your printer and HP’s Instant Ink service.

Here’s how to fix it:

1. Check Internet Connection

  • Make sure your printer is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi.
  • Restart your router and printer to refresh the connection.

2. Sign In to HP Smart and Sync Your Account

  • Open the HP Smart on your computer or phone.
  • Sign in with the same HP account used for Instant Ink.
  • Go to Account > Instant Ink and verify your printer is listed and active.

3. Re-add the Printer in HP Smart

  • In the HP Smart app, remove the printer and then re-add it:
    • Click Printers > Remove Printer.
    • Then click Add Printer and follow the prompts to reconnect it.

4. Check Cartridge Authenticity

  • Make sure the cartridges are Instant Ink cartridges (they should say so on the label).
  • If you’ve used third-party or refilled cartridges, they won’t work with Instant Ink printers.

5. Perform a Printer Reset

  • Unplug the printer while it’s on.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
