Hi @BearG42
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your HP 9730 Wide Format printer's tray. It can be frustrating when the tray won't fit correctly after adjusting it for larger paper sizes. Let’s figure this out together.
- When adjusting the tray for 11x17 paper, did you hear or feel any clicks that might indicate the tray locked into position?
- Is there any visible obstruction in the tray slot, or does the tray appear to be misaligned?
- Have you successfully used the tray for 11x17 paper before, or is this the first time adapting it for this size?
Verify Tray Adjustment:
- Remove the tray from the printer and ensure it is adjusted properly to accommodate 11x17 paper. There are usually guides or markers inside the tray to set the correct paper size.
- Confirm the paper is loaded flush with the guides and not overhanging or bent, as this can prevent the tray from sliding in completely.
Inspect the Tray Slot and Rails:
- Check the printer's tray slot for any obstructions such as debris, leftover paper fragments, or misaligned parts.
- Gently clean the tray slot and rails with a soft cloth to ensure a smooth path.
Reinsert the Tray Without Paper:
- Test inserting the empty tray into the slot. This will help determine if the issue is with the tray itself or the way the paper is loaded.
- If the empty tray fits, try reloading the paper and reinserting it carefully.
Check for Proper Locking Mechanism:
- Some trays have locking mechanisms that secure them into place when adjusted for different sizes. Ensure the tray's locks or latches are fully engaged for the 11x17 setting.
- If the tray seems stuck or doesn’t move smoothly, check for any plastic pieces or tabs that might be out of alignment.
Reset and Power Cycle the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 1-2 minutes, then plug it back in and power it on.
- Sometimes resetting the printer can resolve internal calibration issues that might affect the tray alignment.
If these steps don’t resolve the issue, there might be a problem with the tray or the printer’s internal tray alignment system.
