I have an HP 6400 desk jet printer that is running through my Wi-Fi. I have had it for two years now with flawless printing and gray results. The last two months something has gone wrong with the printer and it will not stop after one print job and keeps continuously printing and sometimes I’m not There to see it so there’s a lot of wasted paper and money going down the drain

Hi @rick2359,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP DeskJet 6400 printer may be stuck in a printing loop or have a communication issue with the device sending the print job. This can be caused by a print queue error, driver issues, or network communication problems. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.

Steps to Fix Continuous Printing Issue:

Clear the Print Queue:

  • On your computer, open the Devices and Printers section (or Printers & Scanners in Windows 10/11).
  • Select your HP 6400 printer, then click Open queue.
  • If there are any stuck print jobs, cancel them.
  • Restart the printer and computer after clearing the queue.

Restart the Printer and Router:

  • Power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
  • Also, restart your Wi-Fi router to clear any possible network glitches.
  • Ensure the printer reconnects to the Wi-Fi network properly.

Check for Duplicate Print Jobs:

  • Sometimes, duplicate jobs get queued unintentionally. Go to your printer’s settings on your computer, and make sure only one job is sent at a time.
  • If you're using a smartphone or tablet to send print jobs, ensure the app isn't repeatedly sending the same print request.

Reinstall the Printer Driver:

  • Go to the HP website and download the latest driver and software for your printer model.
  • Uninstall the current printer driver from your computer and reinstall the latest version to ensure there are no glitches or outdated software issues.

Check Printer Settings:

  • On the printer’s settings menu (or through the HP Smart app), ensure that no setting (such as "Reprint last job" or "Always Print Last Job") is enabled. Sometimes these can cause the printer to repeatedly print the same document.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can usually check for firmware updates through the HP Smart app or directly on HP’s support website.

Check Print Source:

  • If you often print wirelessly from your computer, smartphone, or tablet, make sure that multiple print jobs aren’t being sent by mistake. This can happen if the "Print" button is clicked multiple times.

Note:

  • If the issue persists, try connecting the printer to your computer using a USB cable to determine if the Wi-Fi connection is part of the problem.
  • Monitor the printer after sending a test print to see if it continues printing without any action from you.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
