Using 3 hole punched paper. Printing both sides. Depending on how many pages. some holes on left and some on right..This is stupid. Reverse order doesn't fix problem. If a page in group is one sided, printer should determine that and print the information on front only, not back and flip over. Simple LED ad photo diode to detect punched holes or programmatically determine print one side only for sheet.
Fix it.

Hi @tultalk1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with double-sided printing on 3-hole punched paper. Here are some suggestions to help resolve the issue:
Suggestions for Printing on 3-Hole Punched Paper
Adjust Print Settings:
- In your printer settings, ensure that the duplex printing option is set to "Print on Both Sides" and check if there’s a setting for “Flip on Long Edge” or “Flip on Short Edge.” This can affect how the pages are oriented.
Check Paper Orientation:
- Make sure the punched holes are aligned correctly in the paper tray. Some printers may have specific guidelines for loading paper with holes.
Print One-Sided if Necessary:
- If you have mixed documents (some one-sided, some double-sided), consider manually selecting which pages to print one-sided to avoid issues. You can do this by selecting the specific pages in your print dialog.
Use a Print Preview:
- Always use the print preview feature to check how the document will look when printed. This can help identify any issues before printing the entire document.
Modify Document Layout:
- If feasible, modify the document layout to avoid having important content near the punched holes, especially if you expect mixed print results.
Alternative Solutions
Update Printer Driver:
- Ensure your printer driver is up to date, as updates can fix bugs or improve functionality.
Consider a Different Paper Type:
- If the problem persists, consider using non-punched paper for double-sided printing and then manually punching holes afterward.
Check Printer Settings in Your Application:
- If you’re using specific applications (like Word, PDF viewers), check their print settings to ensure they’re configured correctly for duplex printing.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Not looking to get into an arguement, but reality is that the number of people printing pre-punched is pretty small and there is never going to be any sort of retro-fit for existing equipment and unlikely an accommodation for that in future models due to incredibly low demand and the extra cost and programming required for additional sensors. Your best option is to simply duplex everything which may require you to insert a blank page in some documents to even out the printing, thinking things like a title page where you do not want anything printed on the back.

I had the same problem. If the last page of a document is an ODD number, the holes would be on the wrong side of the last page (which is blank on one side).
Try this:
On the printer, go to: Main Menu>Trays>Manage Trays>Duplex Blank Pages. Select 'Yes' instead of 'Auto'.
Place paper with pre-punched holes in the tray. Print three pages of a document to test for the correct orientation of the paper in the tray. Page 3 should now have holes to the left of the writing and blank on the back.
To print a single page on a single sheet of paper (writing on one side with holes to the left of the writing and blank on the other side) ensure 'Print on both sides' is selected in the print dialogue.
Hope this cures your problem.

Foksul.
